Question 1

I have a functioning 5.25" internal hard drive from a desktop that I would like to put into an external enclosure.  The drive is WD10EADS sata.  I am concerned that the BYTECC case will not have the proper connectors for the drive.  anyone with experience?

Your WD10EADS is a 3.5" drive with a SATA II 3.0Gbs interface. The BYTECC enclosure also has the SATA II 3.0Gbs interface so the connectors should be compatible. I used the enclosure for a 5.25' SATA optical drive. To use the BYTECC for a 3.5" HDD you will need to use the 3.5" adapter which is included. This is a big enclosure and has a fan which will create some noise but the sound is about the same as the BluRay drive I have in it. I suggest that you look at only 3.5" enclosures w/o a fan.

Will this accommodate my ASUS BD/DVD/CD rewritable drive? If yes, how do I insert DVDs?

I bought this for my BluRay/DVD player and it fit just fine. It is a standard computer drive 5.25 inch...like all of them. The grill comes off the enclosure and you discard it when using an optical drive. The disk tray comes right out the front as you can visualize. Keep the grill only for HDD or SSD. I use this enclosure for the optical drive using the USB 3.0 connection since it is attached to my  laptop via a docking station. The laptop does not have an optical drive and I want one for my docked configuration. I have not attempted to use the write function of the drive yet (in the enclosure), only the read function and no problems so far.

Would this work If I connect it to my laptop (Lenovo B570) in order to run a LiteOn IHAS Burner 124b?

David,  I bought this and installed an HP CD/DVD reader/burner inside the enclosure.  I use it with my MacBook Pro and it works great.  The external interface is USB2/USB3 so it will work with either.  The internal interface is SATA.  This enclosure should work fine with your Lenovo.

A lot of optical drives use IDE, is this compatible?

Short answer No. Long Answer, since description says SATA hard disks and dvd drives that is the connection. IDE refers to antiquated technology that would also be PATA or parallel ATA versus Serial ATA. All modern drives are SATA as the speed is much improved. If you have a drive that uses a 40 wire wide IDE cable then this will not work for you and would be way over kill if it would work being that it is USB 3.0.

does the internal metal case with the board com with this?

I don't understand the question. The case comes with power, fan, etc. I just slid a blu ray recorder into it and it works fine. What is it that you are wondering what it comes with?

Is this unit compatible with 8.1 Windows?

You need to ask if the device you will be installing is compatable or do you  have a way of getting drivers. The enclosure has the interface specs of usb 3.0 and is downward compatible. That is what universal connection protocols are all about, compatibility. If the BD, DVD, hard drive is that is installing in the enclosure is compatible then you are all good.

I know that it says it will work with a dvd drive that is 5.25", Will this work for a Hard drive that is 5.25"?

This enclosure will work for a standard internal hard drive. they include an adapter, if you want to use a laptop hard drive you will need a plastic adapter to add to the assembly.
The 5.25" drive is for CD,DVD,BluRay drives.
A 3.5" drive is full size internal, a 2.5" hard drive is used for Lap Tops. I don't ever recall seeing a 5.25" Hard drive and that's going back 30 years.
I hope this answers your question. this is a great enclosure and the USB 3 cable will plug into a USB 2.0 connector if you don't have USB 3 connectors on your computer.

compatable with 1.1 USB?

I am not 100% positive it will work with a 1.1 USB as I don't have any devices with those ports, but I am using it with a 2.0 USB and it works fine. Most of that stuff is backward compatible and should work. The only thing is the data transfer speed might be slowed down due to the limitations of the 1.1 USB port.

Question 10

New Dell desktop computer says it does not recognize this drive, shown "Unknown". It has 6 USB 3.0 ports, so that's why I bought the external enclosure. Updated everything for drivers on the Dell website, tried Device Management, and still cannot use it. Tried 2 DVD burners in it, which I know work internally, and still nothing. Any suggestions how to make this device work? Thanks, Tom

I have had that happen before and I had to go into the computer management program in Windows and assign a drive letter to the external drive before Windows Explorer would see the drive.
