Does it take macro shots, or do you need to purchase a separate lens for that?

The included kit lens is not a macro lens. To be able to take macro shots you will either need to buy a dedicated macro lens (as you would for any camera) or buy a Macro adapter for your lens. Although getting an adapter is cheaper, a dedicated macro lens can also be used as a standard telephoto lens so it pulls double duty and is the better investment in the long run.

How does this camera mount to a tripod? Is it compatible with most major Dolica, Opteka, and Sunpak tripods?

Just a standard tripod screw hole. Should fit any standard tripod. I got a tripod that separates so there is a small black piece that attaches to the camera (which you keep on). That piece them just snaps onto the tripod. Great bc I don't have to screw the camera onto the tripod every time I want to use it.
