Question 1

this ships with a serial cable but how can I use that with modern PC/MAC.
I have Mac mini and MACBOOKPRO none even remotely have serial ports. 
how would you suggest we setup this switch for 1st time use?

Easiest way is to connect one of your machines directly into the switch and manually set your machine’s IP address to 192.168.1.10 (or anything in the 192.168.1.X range except .254) and then open a web browser to 192.168.1.254.  This should give you access to the configuration web page, default username and password are both “cisco”.  You can also use a USB to Serial adapter but that is a separate purchase.

Yes.  It has a basic  Cisco IOS type cli. VERY basic.  But functional.

do all ports on this device gigabit or is it only the uplink?

does this switch support PoE?

Accepted Answer

no.  The switch models ending in P, PP, and MP are POE models.  check the cisco data sheets for how many POE ports are supported on each model.  Not all 20 ports on a 20port switch will be POE.  the P models are typically half the port count.  MP is max POE and typically has all the ports, but not always..depends on model.  the PP models are POE+, and not all ports are poe, so check the datasheets.
