is it a worth while mouse?

Oh yes... I'm still using it, and I've had it for 4 months now. It feels great and has high quality plastic (the nice rubbery feeling one) and you can change its colors. There are three different areas of light that you can change, (the scroll wheel, dpi settings, and logo). You can pick whatever you want :D The software is also pretty easy to use. There are settings to change dpi's (I use 3200), macros, hotkeys, and just more mouse binding settings, as well as color changes (which are the rgb 255 configurations). Would highly recommend that you use a mousepad with this. Doesn't matter which one you use, as long as you have one. The laser is very precise and I do a lot of gaming (League of Legends, Battlefield 3, Call of Duty, Counter Strike, etc.) And the amount of buttons on here is absurd, i hardly use more than the 3 regular mouse buttons :D

Are the forward and back buttons on either side four individually programmable buttons or are they paired?

By default they are paired, but with the Recon software can be mapped individually to perform any function or macro.
