Does anyone know if this is compatible with the Dell Inspiron 15' 5505U? The specs check out and I purchased it but when I try to boot it up the computer either doesn't boot or freezes. Is this a sign of bad RAM or incompatibility?

try one ram at a time. If one boots and the other one doesn't its probably the ram. It looks like your laptop supports up to 32GB of memory, that could also includes your video memory too. just keep that in mind.

Will these chips fit in my mini PC?  The stock chips are 2 7/8 inches wide.

There are to sizes of RAM, but many different standards. DIMMs (Dual Inline Memory Modules) are for desktop systems and servers. SO-DIMM (Small-Outoline Dual Inline Memory Modules) are for laptop sand small form factor systems generally speaking. SO-DIMMS are also used in devices like NAS and some ultra small desktop computers.

In your case, 2 7/8 inch sized module is most likely SO-DIMM and unless you bought your machine before 2012, it is probably running DD4 SO-DIMM.  Even knowing this, is not enough to know exactly what RAM is compatible, because if within DDR4 SO-DIM there are many different models of RAM.

You should always refer to your Computer manufacture to find what RAM is compatible with your machine. Manufactures typically have what is called a Memory QVL or Supported RAM documentation. If you are unable to find this information, you are basically going to be playing a guessing game when buying new RAM, it may boot up, but it might not run very well.

Strongly recommended to refer to you manufactures Memory support list.
