Can I install this on a HP desktop (instead of a laptop)? If so, can I use this to add more RAM instead of just getting new RAM (as in adding 4 GB of RAM to my desktop that already has 4 GB of RAM)?

This is a SODIMM, which is the type of memory used in Laptops. Desktops use DIMM memory, so the answer is No, you cannot use this in your HP desktop. As for adding more memory to your desktop there are a lot of variables. If your running a 32 bit operating system, your computer will never see more than 4gb of memory. Most desktops will have at least 2 memory slots and some will have 4 or more. If you computer already has 4 GB already, you might be able to add additional memory or you might have to replace the memory that is already installed. If you don't know how to check this, I suggest you consult with someone who knows how to check (your local computer shop).
