I have a early 2011 Macbook pro with 2x2gb of RAM installed now. I was wondering if I could buy this single 8gb and replace it with one of the 2gb sticks to make 10gb of total RAM? Is this possible? Will it still increase performance? I know matched RAM produces better performance but I am hoping to upgrade to 16gb of RAM in the future so going this way makes it easier and cheaper for me.

read the model specs to make sure your unit can actually use 16GB or RAM. I have a similar model and mine says 8GB is max.
