can this be used in a desk top or is this only for laptops?

this drive can be used in a laptop or desk top... I replaced a 1TB hard drive in my desktop with this Crucial M500.. I have used Crucial SSD's before and this one did not disapoint me . I did have to get `$6 drive bay attachement as this is a small drive and I had no place to stick it the desktop case. Runs well, decreased my boot time and increased my overall response time.

Question 2

does the 480GB version comes with a SPACER?  I need a spacer for my laptop because my laptop houses 9.5mm standard bay. So, 7mm would not work because the connection would not get establish?

Mine came with a plastic spacer. But the drive also has standard screw mounts. If your laptop uses screws to hold the hard drive in place, then you can just throw the spacer away. If your laptop uses a friction fit, or if it has a socket that the drive drops into, then you can use the spacer to keep it from rattling around.

Question 3

what is this 9.5 adapter ? Will this fit in a standard 3.5 drive tray in my 4 bay enclosure or the internal bays on my Mac Pro or do I still need some other type of tray adapter?

I do not own a Mac Pro, but I do Own a MacBook Pro and a Windows Desktop. For the MacBook Pro, there is no adapter needed, since the drive is the same size as a notebook hard drive. For my Windows Desktop, I had to buy an adapter so that I could properly mount the drive into a 3.5 inch bay. went to crucial website and they recommend Part #: CT3901888 for my laptop, Dell XPS15 (L521X). The part number you have on the site is different (CT960M500SSD1). Can you confirm that this is the same SSD or the same size so it will fit properly? Thanks

Part Number: CT3901888 and this appear to be the same. If there are any differences I would assume they are cosmetic if any. The part #s could possibly be a regional designation. The stats seem identical. The physical dimensions of the drive and connector placement also appear to be identical. My guess is it will work as expected.
That said, it might be a good idea to contact crucial directly before ordering to verify.

Question 5

Will this be compatible with my 17" MacbookPro (mic 2010) and be a noticeable upgrade?

I installed mine in a PC and the improvement was huge. I also have a MBP and if I were going to upgrade it to SSD I would buy this unit. So, I can't say I know for certain that it works in a Mac but it is highly likely that it will.

Question 6

Can someone list everything that comes in the box? SATA cable? Adapters? Or just the drive itself?

You will have just the SSD and the 9.5 mm adapter-frame to adjust for laptops where the regular thickness of the drive is 9.5 mm [this drive is only 7 mm thick].
Not the fastest in the world but so far so good during 2 years of use into MacBook Pro 2012 year model. Has the same speed in OS X, Windows 7,8 and Ubuntu.
Since I've bought it the price halved - good time to consider it for a laptop or even an external drive when you have already a USB 3 external case for it [they are extremely cheap today]. It can be in such case used to boost your speed and memory with light tablets aka MS Surface Pro etc. Thunderbolt case 
is still too expensive and speed of this SSD does not warrant such technology since is slower.

I have a Lenovo X220 tablet. Is this product compatible?

I placed mine in a MSI notebook without a problem.  It should be OK for you too and here is why.  Most manufacturers purchase components from a select number of vendors in large lots or bins at a competitive price.  Of course, these components have to be standardized for that system to work.  So, one size fits all should work for a SSD and it did for mine.  A notable exception to this rule is video cards.  You cannot swap them freely because of voltage and size constraints.  They are not freely available at the retail level in any case

Do these come with rails that will fit in a standard desktop hard drive slot? If not do you have a part number for those?

No, these are 2.5'' and would fit in a laptop such as my T430 and my T60 (I've used it in both since I bought it on newegg). I haven't used it in a desktop, so I don't have that part number.
