Pros: It says "SSD" on the label.
Cons: Slow -- AMAZINGLY SLOW. No -- I mean REALLY REALLY REALLY slow -- read on...
Overall Review: I bought this drive to rejuvenate and old Core2Duo machine I had lying around. When it was really slow, I thought it was the processor / motherboard, and since I wanted a new rig anyway, I just bought a new i7 3770 + motherboard + 16gb RAM.
Since that was really slow, too -- and flaky... I don't mean annoyingly slow, or nitpicking slow, I mean UNUSABLE slow. I called Crucial, but they were quickly unable to troubleshoot past the basics with Saturday staff.
Since I don't have time for this, I ripped the 256gb Crucial m4 SSD out of my VMware test box, and the new machine is BLAZING fast -- WEI says 7.9 as expected for the m4.
Back to the v4 piece of garbage. I put it in the VMware ESXi 5.1 host, and it ran like a dog there, too - so at this point I went out a purchased an Intel 520 Series 180gb SSD and all of my systems are back to normal.
At some point, I might call Crucial again if I get time during the week, but for now this v4 drive is a very small boat anchor.
Cons: Bought on 7/3/2013. Confirmed bad Sept. 15. I had a hard time believing that it could be the cause of the blue screens, MBR loss, failed back ups. I'll be returning it.
Overall Review: Hope they send me a better one. I hate doing restores.
Pros: No moving parts.
Cons: Quit working in less than a year. Laptop no longer reckonize the SSD. It was used very lightly. It was installed in my wifes laptop used mostly for internet surfing.
Overall Review: You would expect more from a device with no moving parts. SSD's do not live up to their hype.
Pros: Lighter, quieter
Cons: Fast boot, slow updates
Overall Review: Used exclusively for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Fast boots and fairly quick application loading. However, every time update had to deal with large number of files (updating linux headers) the light would stay on steady and the machine would sit there for hours.
Finally, yesterday, the SMART system said that failure was imminent despite all the SMART tests reporting good. It was right! Read errors and the thing went casters up. Good thing I back up nightly.
Don't get this. Too good to be true.
Pros: Plug and Play Install
Cons: Everything, Gets slower everday, Scrap Metal at best. Got to be better drive out there. Computer now takes 15 mins to boot off this drive. Only operating ssytem on drive.
Overall Review: Looking for replacement
Pros: Was very fast and reliable when I first received it the SSD.
Cons: I left the computer off for 48 hours and came back to where only the BIOS could read. Couldn't even recover it using Ubuntu.
Pros: price ;-)
Cons: i have used regular hard drives faster than this
Overall Review: normally i would just assume any SSD is much faster than any hard drive, so any SSD will have a dramatic speedi difference.
that might be true for most SSD's but this one may be the exception.
bottom line - look before you leap, and READ THE REVIEWS. dont make the same mistake i did by skipping the reviews.
CrystalDiskInfo speed test has been very helpful too.
Cons: Super slow, corrupts data all the time. I replaced my motherboard, ram, power supply. Eventually I replaced this SSD witha regular 500gb 7200rpm hard drive, I couldn't believe how much faster it was!! A month or so later this drive is totally dead :( I hope the RMA with Crucial goes good!
