Is this device faster, slower, or about the same as a Samsung T5?

The T5 is USB 3.1 the X8 is 3.2. So, yes it is much faster if what you are using it with supports USB 3.2

Cable lengths that are usable? Nothing is mentioned it the specification. USB 3.2 is "relatively" recent ( 2017 ), can I use a thunderbolt cable ( short or long ), USB-C 3.1 cables? The "1050" MB/s is attractive, however if I try and use a USB-C 3.1 cable what latency can I expect, yes I know this is interdependent of the host systems, it is unlikely that a "XP/Win7" user is going to be shopping for this type of item so a modern MB is expected with a newer "OS".

I use a USB c data cable and it works fine. The cable that comes with the unit is about 6" and has a USB 3.0 adapter as well.

Yes, but you can only use it to backup or store PS4 games... PS5 games only can be stored on built in storage.

is this water or splash resistant?

I didn't notice any waterproof material near the USB cable connection, so I don't think it's waterproof.
