Best Office / Home Entertainment NAS

QNAP TS-659 PRO+ Diskless System Superior Performance NAS with iSCSI for Business
QNAP TS-659 PRO+ Diskless System Superior Performance NAS with iSCSI for Business

Pros: Great performance, reliable, expandable (QPKG), customizable, very user friendly, great user community, very good vendor support (continual firmware upgrades). The 659 with 7200 RPM drives pushes 90MB/s sequential writes when copping large files such as DVD backups. Read speeds approach 110MB/s. ISCSI mount points make great backup drives for Win 7 Home Premium which will not backup to network shares without 3rd party software. Also the ISCSI mount points work great with VMWare. The biggest selling point is the 3rd Party application support. The QNAP NAS is a LINUX based system and many applications have been ported to QNAP's user friendly QPKG which can be installed and managed from the QNAP admin Web GUI. If for whatever reason the system dies, or you want to move drives to a new unit as I did, just insert them in the same order and power on. The system automatically detects the existing RAID configuration on the drives and loads all of your previous settings.

Cons: I bought and Open Box unit to save some coin, it had only one flaw, a noisy power supply. I didn't want to void the warranty by opening the case to dampen the vibrating power supply, so I added a decorative CatGoyle which applied just enough pressure to the top of the case to stop the vibration and sound. It has been running quietly for about a year now. The only feature I wish the QNAP products had is a Hybrid-RAID. This would allow different size drives to be fully utilize and only the largest drive would be "lost" for parity (see also Drobo Beyond RAID). This feature has been requested on QNAPs user forms.

Overall Review: Wish NewEgg would carry additional QNAP accessories such as power supplies and drive trays. I have both a 659 Pro+ and an older 639 and both are worth every penny. NewEgg shipping of these units has been an issue. The 639 I purchased over 2 years ago came in an unsealed QNAP box. However the 659 Pro+ Open Box was nicely sealed in a plain box by NewEgg staff. This was a welcomed improvement over the previous 639 shipment. I chose the QNAP product line after researching, Synology, ReadyNAS, DROBO, and others. The feature list is extensive, support for Windows, Linux and Mac as well as mobile apps, cloud storage (S3, ElephantDrive) and other features set it apart. I cannot stress enough how much value is added by the QNAP user community who continue to expand the functionality of the NAS through QPKG bundled applications.

Work great... for a while

LIAN LI ST120-3B ,12CM ARGB FANS , BLACK COLOR , 3 FANS PACK WITH FAN CONTROLLER
LIAN LI ST120-3B ,12CM ARGB FANS , BLACK COLOR , 3 FANS PACK WITH FAN CONTROLLER

Pros: Quick easy install & configuration, good color accuracy with ASUS AuraSync

Cons: Of 6 fans (2x 3 packs) 3 fans have failed. The fans fist begin to make intermittent scraping sounds then it turns to a loud screeching and then they stop spinning. The firs time this happens I was able to unplug the fans, wait a few minutes and then plug them back in resulting in normal operation for a 'while' (sometimes only a few minutes, one fan lasted another week). If the fan begins to make scraping / screeching sounds the bearings are failing and it will stop spinning completely soon(tm)

Overall Review: - The 3 of 6 fans are still working great! - 50% of the cooling & color purchased failing within 6 months, not so great :( I've used fans pre-installed in Lian-Li cases for over a decade ()... they still work great!... these 'after market' solutions are a significate drop of in quality compared to non-LED, old school black on black case fans.

Rock Solid

ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3070 8GB GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0 Video Card TUF-RTX3070-O8G-GAMING

Pros: Won the lottery (aka) NewEgg Shuffle. Fantastic card for the price, even at post tariff pricing! Temps stay cozy between 55-60C under load (rendering). RGB synced with ASUS Strix B550-i MB without additional cables. While RGB is not a selling point to me, random/flashing colors are not wife approved.

Cons: Very sung fit in a Lian-Li TU150, but made it work after removing the front fan and CPU tower cooler fan.

Overall Review: NewEgg shipping was slower than normal/expected as delivery was held in 'out for delivery' from Friday until the following Monday. Thus it appears local (southern CA) NewEgg couriers do not deliver on weekends.

Close but no cigar

G.SKILL TridentX Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model F3-2400C10D-8GTX
G.SKILL TridentX Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model F3-2400C10D-8GTX

Pros: Removable heat sink fins are nice for larger tower CPU coolers.

Cons: Will not reach rated speed of 2400MHz with XMP/DOCP timings without artifacting, BSOD, and spontaneous reboots while playing games. Dropping the memory clock to 2133MHz keeps the system stable while gaming... The frustrating part, is memtest v5.0.1 does not find any errors. Also the APU GPU takes up at least some system memory (even when disabled w/ discrete GPU) so I'm unsure if I've been able to test the entire module.

Overall Review: Config: AMD A10-7850K, Asus A88X-Pro, Intel 120GB SSD

Disapointed

ONKYO TX-NR809 7.2-Channel 3D Network A/V Receiver
ONKYO TX-NR809 7.2-Channel 3D Network A/V Receiver

Pros: Great Price for the holidays. Has every connection I needed including PC and s-video (my PS2 is happy once more). 4K video support/upscaling for under $750 is just flat out awesome. Holds down just about any warped peace of wood. This thing is heavy and rock solid! For the speakers channels that did work, the sound was excellent. Made my little Klipsch speakers and sub sound better than ever! Still holding out hope that with a center channel voices will come in clearer than my old Sony receiver...

Cons: The unit I received had a faulty center channel. It astounds me that this unit could leave the factory without being tested. I have read a few different accounts of a similar failure with this model, but I had hoped these were just early defects that would be corrected quickly, apparently hope does not equal action by Onkyo. Onkyo's support is anything but existent. Normally when you send a support request in via and email form on a company's website you get a conformation email acknowledging they received the request. It has been two days and multiple requests, and I have to receive any response from Onkyo. Onkyo phone support did respond in under 10 min, however their warranty and parts department did not respond in under 30 mins.

Overall Review: New Egg's RMA for a defective product that was shipped with free shipping requires you to pay to send it back. This is rubbing salt in the wound. Not only did NewEgg (through no direct fault of their own) send a defective product, they make the customer pay to send it back. This cost should be past on to the vendors for allow falty products to leave their factories. This would have a direct impact on the level of quality of products available on NewEgg!

Delivered but Not

EVGA GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Video Card 512-P3-N841-A3

Pros: Been waiting for this since the new 8800GT was released with single slot cooling.

Cons: UPS Shipping

Overall Review: Newegg hit a home run, shipped this out the day I ordered it and was going to be delivered one day later, but the delivery guy dropped the ball. UPS Delivered the packages to my "Porch" I live in a condo complex and do not have a porch (wish I did). Package was not at my door when I arrived home :( There is no joy in muddvile.
