Can I use my PC instead of iPhone, iPad, or Android App for Remote Viewing?

Yes you can access the video from any computer with internet. You would access the mydlink website. Sometimes there are java/chrome issues but you should be fine.

If wireless, why the RJ45 connection?

The RJ45 connection is used to initially setup the camera. It can also be used instead of the wireless during normal operation. I live a community with many wireless networks which interfered with my wireless camera single and slowed it down. Since my home was pre-wired with CAT5 I decided to hardwire my d-link cameras, hence the RJ45 connection.

Can you also hear what is going on? Does it feed audio also?

Yes.  These do also send audio and the iPhone app (and I think the browser interface) have a button to toggle on and off.

What do I need to get to be able to record with this camera?

I do not record with mine, but if I recall from reading the literature that came with it, you can sign up for service that will record what the camera is looking at.  It is a fee-based service with a monthly charge.  i don't know the details.

Does this device hook to an i-phone?

Yes, you can do so by downloading the MyDlink Lite software to your phone. Your phone must have iOS6.0 or newer in order to download and use the software. Works nice on iPhone.

[Setup:] House, barn, wireless router, DCS 930-L. The camera can reach the house from the barn, but is unable to sustain a video connection.  I suspect the 930-L just doesn't have enough signal strength.
[ Option 1 ~ Preferred ] If the 931-L has a stronger signal strength, then I could use that to connect to the house and connect the 930-L through the 931-L. This would give me two cameras at the barn.
[ Option 2 ~ Plan "B" ] Purchase a stand-alone wireless repeater/access point and put that at the barn, then connect the 930-L through that.

Fix it right to start.  EnGenius makes a create high-power Outdoor AP + Antenna kit for about $125.  Put one of those on the barnside of your house, wired into your network.  Power runs through the wall to the AP with the network connection so you don't have to have anything more than a 1/4" hole through the wall.

That will probably give you plenty of signal in the barn.  If not, but another one of those kits to mount on the house side of the barn that will bridge the AP and bring a wired ethernet connection inside the barn.

It's the next best thing to having a wire between the house and barn.

Do the camers work with macs ?

I used a Macbook Pro to complete the setup.  I had to log into my router to find the IP address of the camera (wired connection, plugged directly into my router).  Then, I used Chrome to complete the configuration for my wireless network.  I downloaded the free app from the Apple app store and it works flawlessly.

Can you record with this cam?

Not sure... I never got that far.
Mine would drop network connection constantly even though it was located in the same room as the router and since it was located in a vacation property, there was no way to restart it until we were back there.  I've since removed it and brought it back to my main residence but I haven't been able to locate were we stuffed it.

Will this camera send an alert to my phone if it detects a loud sound in my home like a smoke detector going off?

The user manual and configuration screen shows that this model can detect sound, although I'm only using it for motion detection and haven't tried the sound detection.  Also, any alerts that it sends are email-based (not SMS texts), so you'd have to monitor incoming messages that are sent to your email account.

How can i record the stream into my desktop PC?

You will have to setup up your desktop PC as an FTP server. I have a network attached hard drive that has FTP hosting capability. I mapped the FTP drive as a local drive so I accomplished essentially the same thing except I don't have to have my computer on all the time.
