how do I hook this up? Do I need to run off a router or straight off my ATT Uverse modem?

I'm not familiar with the ATT Uverse modem, but this switch does need to be connected to a router that handles DHCP allocations. If the ATT Uverse is your DSL modem/gateway it more than likely also serves as the router for your network. Simply make the connection from the internet port (RJ45 patch cable) to any port on the switch (usually #16 or uplink port labled) and connect all other devices as needed.
