Solid rounter, good technical support

D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit
D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: This is my second DIR-655. (The first was fried along with several other devices when lightning struck out transformer). I've been very happy with both. I run one desktop (wired), and on the wireless side, two laptops, three printers, a tablet and two internet set top boxes (for Netflix). Connecting wireless devices has been very straightforward with WPS. One of the features on the router I particularly like is being able to open a port to a virtual server. I have a Bitnami Windows web server that I sometimes need to access when I'm away from home and this router enables me to do that. I'm also very happy with their technical support (increasingly unusual these days)- I'm not a network person so I sometimes need help configuring the router. I've had a very good experience with D-Link's technical support over the years. And today Wendy and Mae (AR0048244) helped me sort out a connection issue after an AT&T outage. Mae asked me to post mention this in my product review which I was happy to do.

Cons: none

Most Critical Review

Died after 7 months

ASUS Prime B450M-A/CSM AM4 AMD B450 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
ASUS Prime B450M-A/CSM AM4 AMD B450 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Initial setup was simple.

Cons: After 7 months the BIOS could not be accessed (so you can't changing the devices boot order). ASUS customer support were unable to diagnose the problem. The board now has to be RMA'd; where it will be repaired and returned in 7-10 business days. This leaves me without a desktop for probably 2 - 3 weeks not to mention the time wasted dismantling the box and putting it back together. I've used a range of motherboards over the last 12 years (MSI, Gigabyte, Intel); this is the only one that has failed.

Overall Review: If ASUS stood behind their products they'd send a replacement before asking for the defective part to be returned. An RMA for repair leaves customers without a machine for two weeks which is highly problematic for anyone who relies on their desktop for work. UPDATE The ASUS support person's suggestion that I remove the battery from the motherboard and power up the machine had and unfortunate (and unanticipated by me) side effect; the default BIOS settings do not include VM support which has to be turned on. So although when I first ran into the issue of not being able to access the BIOS it was problem, but not a critical one, now I cannot run any VMs since VM support has been turned off and I have no way of turning it back on. So the problem is now much more serious in terms of impacting my work. I have also had some very "difficult" interactions with ASUS technical support. Last Saturday I was told I had to return the board; since that would prevent me from working at all I ordered a new one; then yesterday (Monday) ASUS called and said that after reviewing the case, they would send a replacement (nice but a little late since the new board will arrive tomorrow). Today I got another call from ASUS saying that the replacement could not be sent because the "escalated case had not been endorsed" whatever that means, and the board was out of the 90 day replacement window. When I explained the problem (again) the support representative agreed to try to get a replacement sent but that it would take at least a week to complete the internal paperwork and check if they had a board in stock. More updates will follow as the situation progresses.

Fine case, shame about the plug

Carbide Series 88R CC-9011086-WW Micro ATX Mid-Tower Computer Case
Carbide Series 88R CC-9011086-WW Micro ATX Mid-Tower Computer Case

Pros: The case is generally OK...

Cons: However, when my ASUS mother board failed (!) and I tried unplug the USB3 connection to install the replacement, the USB3 plug came apart. The problem might be the ASUS board socket, but either way, rather irritating.

Overall Review: See above

Nice web interface, not as much range as I had hoped

Tenda AC10U AC1200 Smart Dual-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi Router
Tenda AC10U AC1200 Smart Dual-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi Router

Pros: The setup was easy, the browser UI was nice to work with.

Cons: I bought this with the hope that it might have a stronger wifi signal than my old D-link DIR655; but it hasn't, so I still need the range extenders.

Overall Review: It was inexpensive so not a great loss that it didn't perform as well as I'd hoped.

Great phone

Asus Zenfone 2 Laser Unlocked Smart Phone, 5.5" Silver, 32GB Storage 3GB RAM, US Warranty
Asus Zenfone 2 Laser Unlocked Smart Phone, 5.5" Silver, 32GB Storage 3GB RAM, US Warranty

Pros: The first thing to say is that this is one of the cheapest unlocked phones I've seen. But while it's cheap it does the job almost as well as my wife's Samsung Galaxy 5 for which she paid three time as much. The display is very clear and the design very elegant. The double tap to put to sleep and wake up is a great feature, as are the touch sensitive buttons at the bottom for return, home and window selection - I prefer them to my wife's Samsung Galaxy 5.

Cons: There only two minor irritants. The speakers sound a little tinny and the camera isn't as good in low light as the Galaxy 5.

Overall Review: I have a very cheap pay as you go service provider that costs me only $10 a month - most of the time I'm at home and or the office where I use the WiFi, so a $40/month contract made no sense. However, neither of it's minor deficiencies are of great concern, and aren't worth paying three times the price for an equivalent unlocked phone.

Outstanding value

Asus Zenfone 2 Unlocked Smart Phone, 5.5" Silver , 16GB Storage 2GB RAM, US Warranty
Asus Zenfone 2 Unlocked Smart Phone, 5.5" Silver , 16GB Storage 2GB RAM, US Warranty

Pros: Nice UI. Works flawlessly. The display is excellent, clear and sharp.

Cons: Camera produces images that aren't as smooth as I'd like, but they are quite adequate.

Overall Review: My wife has a Samgung Galaxy 5 which she paid $600 for - this phone does as much for 1/3 the price in a very pleasing and elegant package.
