Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II 2.0 Multimedia Speaker System with BasXPort Technology, Black
Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II 2.0 Multimedia Speaker System with BasXPort Technology, Black

Pros: No distortion Solid bass, especially considering there is no woofer Knobs well placed and easy to use Attractive

Cons: Expensive for a 2.0 set

Overall Review: This set delivers particularly well-balanced sound. Everything you hear is very clear and crisp. It doesn't crackle when I adjust the volume knob either. Bass is firm and balanced. Reviews complaining about bass are misguided... Bass often comes down to personal preference. If it's really important to you, you need a woofer. This set is about balance and crystal-clarity, not about rattling your windows. That's what I wanted, that's what I got. I'm highly satisfied.

Antec Solo Black/Silver Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Antec Solo Black/Silver Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Attractive Panels are solid and well constructed Spacious Good selection of front ports Fairly quiet

Cons: Reset button suddenly snapped off after a few months (really irritating to happen after a BSOD, which was unrelated to the case) Rear fan bearing started rattling at medium and high RPM settings after a year Front double doors to reach the 3.5" drive bays are very awkward Ventilation is poor

Overall Review: Han shot first.

Strong features and build quality, some fitment concerns

Corsair HS70 Wireless Gaming Headset with 7.1 Surround Sound, Carbon
Corsair HS70 Wireless Gaming Headset with 7.1 Surround Sound, Carbon

Pros: Sound quality is good overall, with solid bass and good range. 3D sound is particularly sharp. Footsteps and other audio effects were clear and easy to distinguish directionally. Mic quality was high. Recordings sounded good and other players had no problem hearing me. Good battery life. I got about 7 hours out of a single charge. A 6’ USB cable is included and you can charge the headset while you wear it if you run out of juice. This has only happened to me once, not counting when I forgot to charge it. The headset will shut off automatically if it does not detect sound for about 10 minutes. It warns you of this with a startling voice message. The software is useful and I recommend installing it. While not required, it provides a charge indicator and lets you adjust settings. I encountered no bugs, software issues or glitchy behavior with this headset. It performed flawlessly every time.

Cons: I found this headset comfortable, but surprisingly I needed to use the smallest adjustment on the brace. My head is not very small and I have never had any problem with headset fitment before, so if you have a small head, I would look elsewhere. The ear pads seem durable and comfortably accommodated eyeglasses. After a few hours they begin to feel a little squeezy, but not intolerable. Compared to my wired set (same price point) this one sounds a tad muffled, but this was only noticeable when comparing them directly. Unless you are an avid audio enthusiast, I doubt this will be a distraction.

Overall Review: The feature set on this Corsair is nicely implemented, and as usual for a Corsair product it feels sturdy and well built. My only concern is fitment. People with smaller heads should take note. If you have never had issues with headset fitment, then I fully recommend the Corsair HS70.

Immersive and well designed high-end display

Samsung C34F791 34" Silver Curved FreeSync Gaming Monitor 3440 x 1440, 21:9 UltraWide, 100 Hz Refresh Rate, 1500R Curvature, Tilt/Height Adjustable, HDMI x 2, DP, USB 3.0
Samsung C34F791 34" Silver Curved FreeSync Gaming Monitor 3440 x 1440, 21:9 UltraWide, 100 Hz Refresh Rate, 1500R Curvature, Tilt/Height Adjustable, HDMI x 2, DP, USB 3.0

Pros: - Enormous screen size. 34" horizontal, with an immersive curvature that naturally suits the size and resolution. - High resolution, 3440x1440p with a 21x9 aspect ratio. The effect is like having two screens in one and really nice for productivity. For games, it's highly immersive provided that the game supports the resolution. - Color quality is very high even for a VA panel. Samsung claims the display is factory color-calibrated and includes serial number specific documentation to this effect. Side-by-side with my Dell S2716DG (which uses a TN panel, albeit a good one) the difference is noticeable. Colors are very rich, blacks are dark, and there is little to no light bleed. If color reproduction is crucially important to you, I expect this display would nicely accommodate hardware calibration. - Build quality is very high. The monitor has a sturdy base that left no doubts about stability. The screen slides vertically to adjust viewing angle. A 100X100 VESA mount is included, which is a must if you use a 3rd party mount. If you decide to go that route, make sure you check the weight tolerances. This monitor is thin and light for the size but it's still 34" of monitor - Freesynch support and a 100 Hz refresh rate. This is what really distinguishes the display, making it a standout for both productivity and gaming. Freesynch allows games to synchronize the framerate between the GPU and display, eliminating screen tearing and stutter. The result is buttery smooth performance provided you have a good GPU. I recommend at minimum the AMD RX 480. Nvidia GPUs will still benefit from the high refresh rate, but may still experience screen tearing due to Nvidia's lack of support for Freesync. - A pair of USB3 ports and an audio jack are welcome I/O. Supported interfaces are Displayport and HDMI but you'll want to use Displayport to take advantage of the higher refresh rate. - I experienced zero dead pixels. - Speakers are surprisingly decent, but I expect if you have a monitor this nice, you have good speakers already.

Cons: - The control stick on the back of the monitor is pretty awkward to use. Thankfully, once the settings are established, you don't need to keep adjusting. -Freesync Ultimate causes some flickering. For best results use Freesync Standard.

Overall Review: - Aspect ratio doesn't suit many games. I recommend looking up your favorite titles to see if they support 3440x1440 before buying any monitor at this. If the game doesn't support it, you'll run seamlessly in 2560X1440 instead, with black space filling in the sides. It's not distracting and essentially converts the display into a 27" wide. - The curviture really forces you to be directly in front of the display, so viewing angles are not very good. This is really an inherent drawback to curved displays, but I don't hold it against this display because it goes out of its way to accommodate for physical adjustments. - Overalll this display is very immersive and of high quality. I highly recommend it to someone seeking a high-end display to pair with their AMD graphics card.

Spacious and fast; overall a good value

Mushkin Enhanced ECO2 2.5" 480GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDEC480GB
Mushkin Enhanced ECO2 2.5" 480GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDEC480GB

Pros: Great deal for the capacity and fairly fast. 3-year warranty should ease concerns over reliability, as it appears a bad batch of drives made it out of the factory with problems. I have encountered no such difficulties.

Cons: None. Good on Mushkin for owning up to the problems of the first round of drives and honoring warranties. Let it be a reminder to everyone to always back up your data.

Overall Review: The Mushkin Enhanced ECO2 480GB offers a lot of capacity for an SSD while also delivering solid speeds. Read performance benchmarks at 362 MB/s average. Write performance benchmarked at 323 MB/s average. I copied a 1.8 gig video from a Samsung 830 Pro in 9 seconds, that ought to be fast enough for this price range. Benchmarked on an ASRock based desktop PC. I'm trusting this drive for daily use with a new Windows 10 install. Mushkin's SSD stayed quite cool under testing. It it always a good idea to make sure automatic defrag is disabled on SSDs (type dfrgui.exe into the Search bar from the Start menu, from there you can disable the schedule) That will improve the lifespan of the drive as defragging is unnecessary for solid state. This is a great drive to use as a hard drive replacement in any PC. It's spacious and fast enough for all but the most demanding users. I highly recommend it.

Capable but expensive

Linksys EA8500 Max-stream AC2600 Mu-Mimo Smart Wi-fi Router
Linksys EA8500 Max-stream AC2600 Mu-Mimo Smart Wi-fi Router

Pros: The device looks solid and feels solid; Sturdy construction, and decent design. You can turn the status lights off, if the constant LEDs are a problem. The Interface is simple to understand and easy to use. Setup Configuration is very easy. You can plainly see all connected devices using the Network Map. And, the USB 3 Network Attached Storage feature is great for movies and files you want to share on the network; Throughput is more than enough to stream any content. The range of this router is very good. I have mine near the back of a 2500 square foot brick house; Not only do I have near the same throughput *everywhere* in the house, but I get okay signal on the front sidewalk, and good signal in the garage, another 50 feet from the house.

Cons: I don't like the fact that, when setting up the router, the encryption type is not plainly stated, or selectable. Despite a "VLAN" option in Connectivity settings, no actual VLAN capabilities are present on the device. While I have a small network that doesn't require complex subnetting, this should be a standard feature on *all* routers. The built-in speed test is not programmed for anything but IE running with Flash, making it pretty useless. The mobile app was also a disappointment- A hassle to get working, for not much payoff in terms of features.

Overall Review: Overall, this is a well performing router, that I'm confident will work well into the future. However, the price is steep considering what you're getting for it. I recommend it for someone looking for sturdiness, and signal reliability over bells and whistles.
