Dense 320GB platters
Pros: FAST, QUIET, & COOL. Bought 4 of these to replace my 4x250GB array, and the WD640GB's are literally TWICE as fast and silent. Old drives would average a temp of 105; WD640 drives are averaging at about 96F (using hddtemp). My benchmarks (hdparm, bonnie++,zcav) show that the fastest of my batch of drives reads at an amazing max 119MB/s, with the remaining 3 maxing at around 110MB/s. linux mdraid benchmarks: 4xRAID0 RAW READ/WRITE is about about 416MB/s, but RealWorld bonnie++ ext3 (noatime, nodirtime, data=writeback) benchmarks place it closer to ~340MB/s read, ~320MB/s write. With 4xRAID5 ext3 (default) it's about 225MB/s read, 147MB/s write.
Cons: All 4 drives passed WD's DLG diagnostics, but according to my ZCAV benchmarks, one of the four drive's throughput is over 50% slower for the first 5GB, then ramps up to full speed. I suspect there are quite a few relocated bad sectors here for whatever reason. Not worth the hassle for me to RMA the drive because of it; I've just made sure that /boot and a little-used contiguous LogicalVolume that follows it live in that location to minimize impact. Batch details FYI: Drive S/N is WD-WCASY0019757; Firmware: 01.03B01
No charge indicator
Pros: Very compact in size; electrical prongs fold up too.
Cons: 1) No full charge indicator; 2) Takes about 20 hours to charge.
Great PSU (disregard the rebate)
Pros: Quality Thermaltake name; modular cables to limit unnecessary clutter; large, quiet cooling fan; 3 year warranty. My system has a maximum draw of only about 320W with 8 drives (rebuilding raid) and while 100% CPU and 100% GPU. Didn't need 700W, but the headroom above my old 500W PSU is nice to have.
Cons: Was a tight fit in my Lian-Li PC-60 midtower case: 1) Had to remove the aluminum sticker on the side of the unit for it to slide in; 2) Needed to remove my top case fan for it to slide all the way in; 3) The included silicone gasket was impossible to make use of in this tight situation.
Overall Review: Beware any REBATES provided by WORLDWIDEREBATES.com. I bought this PSU a month ago when the rebate was $40 (is now $30), and I was meticulous as always in providing all the needed information (UPC code cutout, copy of the dated newegg invoice, etc.), yet today they inform me that it was NOT APPROVED, and one of the three bogus reasons they cited was "Reseller [newegg] is not eligible for this offer". Riiiight - nice scam. This is the first time in many years that I've ever had a rebate declined, and I will never purchase another product if it's processed by WorldWideRebates.
Very quiet
Pros: MUCH quieter than my previous $20 strip cutter.
Cons: Some of the shredded paper ends up in the upper CD shred tray making it harder to separate.
Overall Review: Would definitely recommend the quiet models.
low power; easy o/c
Pros: Low wattage; Foolproof O/C (2.6 -> 3.1GHz) without increasing the voltage. Hardware Virtualization. FREE T-Shirt. Best bang/buck.
Cons: affordable quadcore is just around the corner...
great 4in3 bay enclosure
Pros: 1) Drives can be individually powered up and down; 2) 4in3 saves space; 3) Large fan with fan alarm and alarm reset; 4) Accepts both sata and old molex power inputs.
Cons: 1) No drive activity LEDs. 2) No support for hardware RAID LEDs. 3) Drive latches are a little flimsy. 4) The power connectors are somewhat hard to reach behind the fan when the enclosure is installed.
Factory refurbished HDDs
Bought two factory refurbished 6TB WD HDDs from Neworld. They were sealed in anti-static bags, packed inside individual "air pockets" about 4 inches thick, and arrived in a pouch vs a cardboard box. Drives functioning normally after 2 weeks in a RAID array; extended SMART tests passed, and no errors.
