Solid Performance

BIOSTAR GeForce 6800XT 512MB GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Graphics Card V6802XA52
BIOSTAR GeForce 6800XT 512MB GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Graphics Card V6802XA52

Pros: This card is very fast, doesn't overheat easily, and stopped my FMV's from skipping in games.

Cons: It is really long and the fan is kind of big. Make room in your case for this card. Drivers are just okay. Uses a ton of power.

Overall Review: First of all the specs alone should say it all about how good this card is. The performance holds true to the stats written there. I bought this card intending for it to be the last AGP card I'll buy before going PCI-E, and I know that will happen. I have an MSI PT880 Neo mobo and it works just fine: no need to update BIOS. One thing that sucked was uninstalling my ATI drivers from before. Since I didn't uninstall EVERYTHING before putting in the card for the first time, my system would restart at startup, but I should have seen that one coming. I upgraded from an ATI 9600XT that overheated a lot and got major artifacts. This card is a lot bigger than that one: the fan is flush against a PCI slot so it almost uses it up. The drivers nVidia give you are pretty good for stock drivers, but the Omega ones I was used to are WAY better: unfortunately the current Omega drivers are almost the same as the stock ones. Overall I highly recommend this card though.

Most Critical Review

I changed my mind

BIOSTAR GeForce 6800XT 512MB GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Graphics Card V6802XA52
BIOSTAR GeForce 6800XT 512MB GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Graphics Card V6802XA52

Pros: Most things work...

Cons: ...except the fan.

Overall Review: I wrote the review called 'Solid Performance' before but I changed my mind on this card. There is a blown capacitor on the card that must be on the same circuit as the fan because the fan runs slow causing the GPU and heat sink to run hot. The problem happened a while ago and I didn't realize it until just earlier this week. The temporary fix I had set up before doesn't work anymore and the fan is way unbalanced and spins out of control. The card still works, I just don't want to run it for long periods of time now. This was definitely a sleeper of a problem and makes me wonder what other ones might lie ahead. I'll also NEVER overclock this card even in the littlest bit.

Arctic Silver Ceramique Thermal Compound
Arctic Silver Ceramique Thermal Compound

Pros: Great Cooling. Sets immediately when the heat sink is attached.

Cons: Because it sets so quickly, it is difficult to spread.

Overall Review: Arctic Silver 5 didn't cool my system noticably, so I tried out this tube and I'm very impressed. I also combined it with a high-end heat sink and together they cooled the high temp on my P4 by 26ºC, VERY noticable. Perhaps I didn't apply enough of the Arctic Silver 5 before.

Very Good

nMEDIAPC ICETANK 90mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
nMEDIAPC ICETANK 90mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler

Pros: Dropped high temp from 79ºC to 53º. It's quiet at full speed and silent at low speed. Comes with a rheostat for adjustable speed. Looks

Cons: Really REALLY big!!! Pretty heavy too.

Overall Review: When I installed the HSF, it took entirely too long because I had to bend an inductor afer removing the motherboard. I have a PT880 Neo with a P4 CPU and though I finally fit in the fan, removal and re-insertion is still difficult. If I had more space around the mounting bracket it would have been easy though; my motherboard is just crowded. In addition to replacing my stock cooler and Arctic Silver 5, I added Arctic Silver Ceramique, so the huge temperature drop is not solely the fan. Since the fan is so heavy, I'm scared that a sudden jerk might cause it to snap my board.
