Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - Core 2 Duo Wolfdale Dual-Core 3.0 GHz LGA 775 65W Processor - BX80570E8400
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - Core 2 Duo Wolfdale Dual-Core 3.0 GHz LGA 775 65W Processor - BX80570E8400

Pros: fast, runs cool, low voltage requirement, fast, 6 meg L2 cache, overclocks like nothing i've ever seen.

Cons: some will say price, but i'm really happy with the price/performance ratio on this thing. much faster than my old E6320 and only a few bucks more. maybe i could have gotten it a little cheaper elsewhere, but Newegg got it to my house next day with free shipping. no complaints here.

Overall Review: most people will probably have to update their BIOS to run this, but that's not a big deal. these processors appear to consistently and reliably overclock to 4 GHz and beyond if you're so inclined. my oldish motherboard is limited to 425 FSB so i can't clock mine over 3.825 GHz, but that's okay. i can run 3.825 at a miserly 1.225 Vcore. i'm impressed. 3DMark06 score of 17,606 with this and my dual Radeon HD3870's. my computer levitates about two inches above my desk now. i think it's self-aware.

Most Critical Review

It reboots by itself

Zotac ZBOX ZBOXHD-ND22-U Intel dual core CULV SU2300 NVIDIA ION graphics processor 2 x 204Pin Black / Silver Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: Small form factor. Somewhat quiet. Efficient.

Cons: It reboots by itself. Sometimes when rebooting by itself, it hangs on the BIOS screen. Sometimes it tells me that it can't boot to my boot drive. I've run Prime95 and Memtest until I was blue in the face. All the components seem to work. It continues to reboot by itself though.

G.Skill memory has always been perfect for me

G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-2133C10D-16GAB
G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-2133C10D-16GAB

Pros: My six year-old motherboard recognized the XMP profile and set the memory to its advertised speed without any problems. It has been running for the past year or so without issue. Benchmarks are all exactly what you'd expect for this speed and latency. Heat spreader looks fairly nice.

Cons: None whatsoever.

Overall Review: I forget how many different G.Skill memory kits I've owned over the years, but it's a lot. I've never had one of their modules fail on me. They have always run at advertised speed until I sold the parts or moved on.

One of my sticks died after five years

Mushkin Enhanced Redline 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model 997105
Mushkin Enhanced Redline 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model 997105

Pros: I bought this RAM because it had good specs for the price and pretty heat spreaders. It had pretty good timings and still ran at the default 1.5v, which I liked.

Cons: One of my sticks died after five years. It was in a well-ventilated case and always run at the default XMP profile (1866 @ 9-9-9-27) - no overclocking. I came back here to check the reviews to see if others had problems, and two of the five current reviews complain about a dead stick. I decided to add my voice to the choir in case there was a bad batch and others want to know.

Overall Review: 3/5 eggs because it was good while it lasted, although I expect RAM to last longer under fairly light use. My motherboard recognized its XMP profile and it ran great for the first five years.

Slow booting keyboard - can't enter BIOS with it

Cooler Master CM Storm Trigger Mechanical Gaming Keyboard CherryMX Brown Switch USB + Wrist Rest
Cooler Master CM Storm Trigger Mechanical Gaming Keyboard CherryMX Brown Switch USB + Wrist Rest

Pros: The Cherry MX switches are awesome. It has a nice, solid construction. Rubberized surfaces feel nice. My personal typing record went from 140 wpm to 153 wpm within two weeks (my model has Cherry Brown switches) and I know I can go faster with some practice. 100% mechanical keys with a nice, bold font on them. The back-lit keys are great, and I understand why the numbers and symbols need to be reversed from the standard layout on the top row.

Cons: It takes four seconds for this keyboard to "boot up" after it receives power. It's so slow to start that I can't enter the BIOS on my computer with it - I need to plug in a different USB keyboard so I can hit Del before Windows begins to load.

Overall Review: There are some other "first generation" type quirks in the design of this keyboard; some wrinkles that I expect will get ironed out in future revisions. If you require back-lit keys and a choice of Cherry MX switches, though, there aren't currently many makes to choose from. This keyboard had all the features I wanted without looking like a gimmicky "gamerz only" type device.

The 2-piece design is garbage

Logitech G9x Black Two modes scroll USB Wired Laser 5700 dpi Gaming Mouse
Logitech G9x Black Two modes scroll USB Wired Laser 5700 dpi Gaming Mouse

Pros: The components inside the mouse appear to be well made. None of that matters if I can't use the mouse though.

Cons: The mouse has a 2-piece design. It's a mouse with a cover piece that goes over it. My flimsy cover piece got stretched out after a year or so, so now my thumb buttons don't work any more. You don't actually press the thumb buttons directly on this mouse. You press a button on the cover, which then presses itself into the button on the mouse. It's a terrible design that is guaranteed to fail in time.

Overall Review: Logitech's customer service does not stand by this defective product. They won't send me a replacement cover piece without a receipt, and this mouse was a gift. So they just told me that I'm out of luck. I've had two Logitech mice fail on me in a row. I don't mind paying this much money for a mouse if the company will stand by it. Since Logitech won't stand by their product, I will be switching to Gigabyte mice from here on out.
