Ordered 10TB for my QNAP 4-bay NAS

HGST Deskstar NAS 3.5" 10TB 7200 RPM 256MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Retail Packaging 0S04037
HGST Deskstar NAS 3.5" 10TB 7200 RPM 256MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Retail Packaging 0S04037

Pros: Bought 2 10TB drives on 10/10/2017. ordered 2 more on 02/20/2018 to expand storage. They do not get a ton of read/writes on my NAS units. But I prefer the 7200 rpm over the 5400 on the WD Red I used to buy.

Cons: None so far

Overall Review: I have 41 HGST NAS drives. All but one was purchased from Newegg. Bought my first 4TB drive on 7/24/2014. Most of my HGST NAS drives are 4TB, 6TB or 8TB model. Four of them are now the 10TB drives. Of all the drives purchased since 2014, only had one 8TB fail. Returned it to mfg. They sent me a brand new drive in retail box. The 8TB that failed was only 8 months old. It was obviously just a lemon. I can live with one lemon out of 41 over four years. I am very happy with the HGST NAS drives installed in my NAS devices. I recommend HGST NAS drives to everyone.

Pros: none

Cons: After owning two of these for five months, one failed and would no longer register that there were any drives installed. The second failed a few days later after I installed two blank drives and pressed the reset button. The second unit no longer works over esata, only works on usb.

Overall Review: fortunately I was using raid 1. I installed one drive from each unit into single drive enclosures and they are working fine with no data loss. All four drives passed diagnostics with no errors. So I'm positive the enclosures are defective, not the drives. After experiencing such a high failure rate, and reading similar reviews from others, I refuse to trust my data to replacement units from the manufacturer. I'll be looking for a new dual drive raid 1 enclosure to replace these.

StarTech.com S352BU33RER 3.5" Black SATA III USB 3.0 / eSATA Dual-Bay Trayless 3.5” SATA III Hard Drive Enclosure with UASP

Pros: I have been buying StarTech S352BU33RER 2-BAY since February 2017 to replace my aging AMS VENUS DS-DS3RPRO2 enclosures. My old AMS VENUS enclosures seem to be failing after many years of usage. They are now out of production. I selected this enclosure as my new Raid1 esata enclosure because it is Trayless. I'm tied of having to screw drives into a tray. And I can afford the reasonable price. Not that much more than my old AMS VENUS enclosures.

Cons: none so far.

Overall Review: I now have 3 enclosures and have not had any problems. I REALLY love how raid/jbod etc mode settings are on front of unit. In my opinion this is a great bonus. It is a total pain when you have to try and access these settings on the back of the unit. Always hated that with previous enclosures. On other enclosures you have to read dip switch settings in manual. Not with this one. it tells you on the front. Select your mode setting on front, pop in clean drives, and hold in mode button on front for 5 seconds or so.
