Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS)
One of the greatest hindrances to hard disk performance is vibration. Like a needle on a record, the disk drive’s head must try to follow narrow data tracks in order to read (or write) information. These problems are particularly acute in multi-drive systems, because drives tend to be installed alongside each other, in arrays. The vibration caused by the rotation and seek activities of nearby drives can affect the whole array, progressively disturbing the operation of each drive in the system. The drop in performance can be significant. That's why the Deskstar NAS hard drive has an advance Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) that anticipates disturbances and counteracts them, maximizing performance in the most arduous conditions. If the RVS sensors feel a vibration rippling through the drive, they send a signal to the actuator that controls the head’s position. The actuator then compensates for the disturbance, counteracting it with an equal and opposite force. In this way, the head is able to 'ride' the vibration and stay on track, helping to prevent data loss or corruption.

I've bought five of these things

Pros: - No failures in 9mo with four in use.
- Designed for NAS use (Evidently, the harmonic vibration involved with multiple drives causes pre-mature failure and these drives are designed with that in mind)

Cons: - Expensive, Ughhh,,.

Other Thoughts: I was really having an issue justifying to myself the argument for buying these.. I bought the initial four for my NAS RAID 6 setup.. It made my stomach turn. Like $350.00/ea. Ughhh.. I'm paranoid about my data, which is why I'm using a RAID 6. The whole idea was that my data would be safe if TWO drives faulted out of the four. The downside of course is that of my 40TB of HDD, I only get apprx 20TB of storage.. I sucked it up and bought them (I've been advised that if you have a RAID 5 configuration and a drive fails, that it is not unheard of to have a 2nd drive fail during the rebuild, especially if there is a lot of data and the drives are large, resulting in a catastrophic loss of EVERYTHING). Could only afford four - bought a fifth as a hot swap backup a couple months later and HAVEN"T HAD TO USE IT YET!! This is the scenario,, they reside in a QNAP NAS. It runs on some QNAP custom version/distro of LINUX. In the 9mo that it has been running, it has indeed suffered a handful (maybe four) of power outages during our monsoon season and not yet punched out a drive - thankfully. Additionally, even though I'm running a RAID 6, for some reason, QNAP seems to think they need to SCRUB the RAID on a regular basis. This beats on the drives for the sake of "data integrity". Seems a little backward to me. Regardless, these drives receive a weekly beating for this reason.

The short version is that these drives have been beaten up. albeit only for 9mo., but they have been put through the ringer in my opinion and are not showing any signs of failing to date. I was really, really concerned that this was going to be the weak link that financially ate me alive - the four drives cost as much as the freaking server the Christs sake..

Anyway - they've been better than expected.

**** EDIT 4/10/2019: 17mos in and still no failures. Drives are packed w/all my data backups, movies, music, photos and now about a rolling month of HD 30fps security video from four ip cameras. Gets used daily as a movie streaming device. Gathering Security Video 24/7. RAID scrubbing now takes about 30hrs (due to data size) so I cut it down to once a month. These drives are in use every minute of every day and get beat on especially violently during the RAID scrubbing it seems. They've been wonderful. Very, very pleased. Would make the same choice again. This of course means one will go out tomorrow.. JK.. 1,000,000hrs/114yrs MTBF.. Feeling safe..

10TBs are not reliable

Pros: N/A

Cons: Not stable

Other Thoughts: I'm a big time HGST guy, most of my HDDs are 3TB-8TB drives from HGST and have lasted for about 4 years and going strong and silent.

I bought 2 of these over the course of 2 years and both have or had issues. 1 from the get go had clunking on startup so returned it. My other that I've had for a year had clunking and grinding noises (mechanical issues) and after an RMA still has the same issues.

I would not recommend buying the 10TB capacity at this time.

Hit or miss reliability

Pros: - Good performance

Cons: - Spotty reliability

Other Thoughts: I ordered 9 of these drives in total. 1 of them reported 300+ bad sectors after about 5 months of usage: RMA'ed. 1 drive that was kept in spare inventory was DOA out of the box: RMA'ed. I previously thought HGST was more reliable than Seagate's Ironwolf line, but I have yet to experience any failures with my Ironwolf drives. Due to reliability concerns, I would not recommend these unless you plan to have a few spares on hand in the event a drive fails.

Year later, so far good. Year later still good.

Pros: Great capacity, fast. Not listed as compatible for Qnap-251, but so far no errors. I am WD guy, but for the first time in long time, I went with HGST

Cons: None to be truly bothersome. This 10TB runs at 44 deg. 9 deg. higher then 4TB WD Red. Definitely noisier then WD as well, but acceptable IMHO even sitting 4ft away from the Qnap TS-251.

Other Thoughts: I am a WD guy, but due to great saving, I purchased these two HGST. Not disappointed so far, but will be back as it is to early to tell. So far I would recommend this drive to a friend.

Year Later still good, interesting as operating temperature of both drives went down. (now operating at 32 deg Celsius). Happy, Happy, Happy. May purchase another one to have one on standby.

10TB of space, I got 3 of these for my HTPC NAS!

Pros: -- Instant 30TB of Space, allowed me to copy 5 of my old 2TB drives to one of these 10TB drives, I was able to sell/give my 2tb/3tb drives.
-- 24x7x365 workload and not a single issue after almost 4-5 months running
-- A lot faster access to my media files.
-- btrfs was my choice, even though zfs would've been better.

Cons: -- Drives do have some noise, but once the side panels are back on it's hardly noticeable. I'm looking into build a server rack with 24 of these. But The Pros/Cons still has me concerned.
-- None really.

One Disk is NOT Working out of the Box

Pros: Fast Shipping

Cons: on disk not working out of the box

Other Thoughts: I bought 4 Disks of 10TB capacity to use in my 4 Bay synology NAS
product shipped fast , I just received them today BUT Unfortunately ONE disk out of four IS NOT WORKING out of the box
Synology is not recognizing it , i connected it to a PC, it didn't recognize it even from BIOS unlike the other working Disks
VERY DISAPPOINTED

HGST makes the most reliable drives I have ever owned

Pros: #1 Reliable
#2 Reliable
#3 Reliable
You get the point. Since switching solely to HGST drives 5 years ago I have not had a hard drive failure
Buy it, install it, use it, forget it.

Cons: LOL.... there are NONE..... well okay... they cost money, but what doesn't? Sunshine?

Other Thoughts: Ventilation and active fan cooling is HIGHLY recommended. These run warm at 7200RPM.
I have 2 servers with 30 HGST drives of 4,5,6,8 and 10TB drives. Not one failure in 5 years. Not one.
The best decision I could ever make was to NEVER buy another sleazegate drive again after throwing 9 of them in the trash at one time. HGST drives are my GO TO drive for large storage drives. I cannot comment on their RMA process since I have yet to have one fail. I use quality eVGA power supplies and every machine is on a UPS. It's not a hard drive's fault if they are connected to dirty power or get zapped because they are not protected.

Works great in my Synology NAS

Pros: More space than I would ever use
Quiet,
Not a lot of heat.

Cons: price fixed.

Other Thoughts: The unfortunate facts of life I ended up buying these elsewhere for $280 a piece with free shipping and no tax.
What gets me is that Newegg refuses to do a price match unless it benefits them.
So when you can get these at $280 with free shipping and they are STILL making a profit means that Newegg is making at least $30 on each of these drives.
Considering the cost of terabyte per $ you can see what I mean just look at 6 and 8 terabyte drives and you can see the jump because they know that the 10's will sell for just a few dollars more.
If there wasn't such a jump they would never be able to sell the lower drives.

I know this will never get posted because it is negative against Newegg nut as long as they keep using these tactics I'm not purchasing drives from them anymore.

I don't appreciate price fixing anymore than the next guy.

Here is a quick update.
I LOVE these drives so far.
I am hoping that before they implement sales tax which has now come down from the Supreme Court that NewEGG sells them again for the price I bought them for or better because I still need 7 more to fill my NAS.

If they wait too long then I will not be able to afford them and I won't buy them at all unless the price goes down enormously.

It is ridiculous that if you can get the 8 TB versions for $250 that you have to pay a premium for 2 more TB when 12TB is now the norm for high end NAS.

AND NewEgg restricts the amount you can buy and the discounts they give.
My last discount ended at $20 each up to $100 which stopped me from buying more.
You want to maintain restriction then I shop from your competitors. It's called Capitalism.
They get the $2,000 and you don't. It's that simple.
