Hard Work Pays Off

ARCTIC Accelero TT 690 VGA Cooler - GTX 690, Dual Quiet 120mm PWM Fans, Extreme Cooling
ARCTIC Accelero TT 690 VGA Cooler - GTX 690, Dual Quiet 120mm PWM Fans, Extreme Cooling

Pros: Extremely quiet! While it looks a funny compared to the sexy fan/heat sync built on to the GTX690 it's clearly much much higher quality on the inside.

Cons: Like I said above, it doesn't look sexy. I don't really care about this, but if you want to show off an open case you'll have some explaining to do. This is my first time installing an aftermarket fan like this and it's more laborious and stressful process than I imagined. It took me maybe 2 hours (making some mistakes along the way). Since I wish I could have known this before buying, here's the process: - Remove about 20 tiny screws, many of them the star shaped ones. (My screwdriver head bent here and I had to get a new one.) - Peel of the old fan and clean up all the old thermal grease. - Cut up the supplied thermal pads provided into little squares and peel off one protective sides. - Stick the pads to the new fan in all the designated spots and peel off the other protective sides. - Connect the fan cable and carefully position the card over the fan. - Screw in all the new screws. (I messed up here and spent 30 minutes trying to put the old screws back in.) - Realize that you have hairline cuts all over your hands and probably should have worn gloves. Oops. Most of difficulty I blame nVidia and myself for, but I'm taking an egg off because I wish it was more clearly noted what level of skill is needed to install it.

Overall Review: I learned a lot from installing this and I'm really glad I did it. If you've built a few computers and want to take one tiny step forward in your geekery, give this a try! If this is your first time building, I'd buy your geek friend dinner and get him to do the work.

GREAT CASE (with some nit picks)

IN WIN H-FRAME Open-Air design, ATX chassis,Toolless, 2-4mm aluminum metal plates, Front USB 3.0 X 2, USB 2.0 X 1, HD Audio, 3.5"/2.5" SATA HDD EZ-swap modules x 4, support 350mm
IN WIN H-FRAME Open-Air design, ATX chassis,Toolless, 2-4mm aluminum metal plates, Front USB 3.0 X 2, USB 2.0 X 1, HD Audio, 3.5"/2.5" SATA HDD EZ-swap modules x 4, support 350mm

Pros: Beautiful inside and out. Very well though out drive bays, cabling, front panel, and more. I love the space behind the motherboard for routing cables. I keep finding new little details (such as a bevel to hold charging phones) that impress me with how much care went into the design. Keeps everything cool with no case fans... critical for making a quite PC. Just enough space to fit that big ZALMAN Triple Fan CPU Cooler!

Cons: I have to point out some tiny flaws, but compared to all the pros it's nowhere near taking off an egg. - Some internal fins overlap 1/8th of an inch with the upper left corner of my mother board! This actually blocks use of the EZ Plug power connector (needed if you're using 3 or 4 way SLI). Fortunately I'm only running one video card and didn't need it or it would have been some serious dremel work to fix. - The same fin also made it nearly impossible to plug in the required power from the power supply! I broke of the plastic clip on the cable and then it just barely slid by. I'll have to be careful that it never shakes loose. - One of the metal rods in the back lines up with the audio jacks and makes it difficult to plug in my speakers. - Installing the disc drive was tricky than I expected with all the other cables in the way. I wish I had done that first. - Small SSD drive didn't detect at first. I had to unplug it then replug it once. - One of the rubber feet fell of when I was moving the case from the floor to the desk... keep an eye on those things.

Overall Review: I'm super glad I want with this case. It's one of the most unusual ones I've ever had, but in the future I would want something similar. Maybe a slightly smaller version with a few tweaks to fix my nit picks.

Don't Get It For Nero

LITE-ON 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal H/H Internal BD Combo with Nero Essential Model IHES312-98
LITE-ON 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal H/H Internal BD Combo with Nero Essential Model IHES312-98

Pros: Drive seems to work okay. No surprises.

Cons: Since the Nero disc came with it I decided to install it for the heck of it. It took over 3 hours to install! I'm kind of afraid to run the software given how bloated the installation process was.

Overall Review: I still have to find Bluray playing software, but that comes with the territory.

The Sound of Silence

ZALMAN CNPS12X 120mm Long Life Bearing High Performance Triple Fan CPU Cooler
ZALMAN CNPS12X 120mm Long Life Bearing High Performance Triple Fan CPU Cooler

Pros: I built my latest computer with low noise as a primary concern and this fan has worked out brilliantly! It just touches my RAM and it leaves 1/4 inch of head room in my IN WIN H-FRAME case. So, so quiet and does it's job well. Not too hard to install.

Cons: I wish these fans would leave the tiniest bit more room for RAM (if I had used all 8 slots, there's no way the closest sticks on each side would have fit). I had to spend a lot of time 'measuring' the inside of a case from an image to be sure it would fit. This thing is pretty big (though lower profile than some fans I looked at) so don't assume it will fit in your case.

Overall Review: Really happy I went with this fan. The others I was looking at wouldn't have fit with the RAM or the case. I was concerned that this had a slightly higher dB rating (volume), but in action it's so quiet that it doesn't even register for me.

2 words: Stiff Cabling

mushkin XP-650 650W ATX12V SLI Ready Modular Power Supply
mushkin XP-650 650W ATX12V SLI Ready Modular Power Supply

Pros: Powerful! Modular cabling is an awesome concept: leaves no wasted cables inside my box. Glows green... that's cool. Came with a nice power cable too.

Cons: I read some reviews here that mentioned the cabling was stiff, but I had no idea what I was in for. After dealing with these cables I wanted to cry.

Overall Review: WOW, the cables are stiff! If your case doesn't have much interior space, I would seriously consider a different power supply.

Fast... I guess

ASUS P5B-E LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS P5B-E LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: 4 processors in 1! 64-bit!

Cons: None.

Overall Review: I'm not blown away by how fast it is. But after going back to my older PC I can tell that it's making quite a difference. Will be worth the money as soon as games take advantage of it.
