Excellent case for the money for a home server

NORCO RPC-4308 4U Rackmount Short Depth 15.25" 4U Rackmount Case with Eight Hot Swap Trays Standard ATX, mini redundant power supply
NORCO RPC-4308 4U Rackmount Short Depth 15.25" 4U Rackmount Case with Eight Hot Swap Trays Standard ATX, mini redundant power supply

Pros: There is no cheaper 4u case with 8 drive bays, including any blank 4u with quality 5.25 bay to 3.5 converters. Small size means that even on a relatively short depth rack there is room behind it to put other light equipment like switches.

Cons: Stock fans are incredibly loud, but not unexpected. The mesh panel on the front means that air flows through that easily open panel and not through the drive bays much, unless it is covered. See below.

Overall Review: Can not comment on how well the stock fans cool as I did not use them at all since I knew they would be way too loud for my application. This case can be kept cool and quiet with different fans and some work on the airflow, as follows. Using 2 Noctua 1800 rpm 80mm fans in the back Noctua NH-U9B with forward to back alignment (amd users need to request a special conversion kit for this, it is free) and both fans attached. Cover the front mesh plate with sticky back insulation foam (the kind you would use to seal around a window air conditioner). Leave the middle (the width of the front i/o panel) of the mesh panel uncovered. If you cover the whole thing, not enough air will get through just from the drive bay vents. If you don't cover it at all though, almost no air goes through the drive vents. Covering the front panel will require removing the drive bay section, but that only requires removing 8 screws. The backplane part can actually be left in... although that is also easily removable with 4 screws.

Toxic

BELKIN F8E089-BLK Mouse Pad
BELKIN F8E089-BLK Mouse Pad

Pros: Good size, good shape

Cons: I returned this mousepad as "defective" (hard to sink that low for a mousepad, but this one does) due to the unbelievably toxic odor. I assumed other reviewers were exaggerating, and or had a more sensitive sense of smell than I do. And that may be the case, but after setting this mousepad aside for 2 days and periodically dousing it in febreeze the odor did not significantly improve. Immediately on taking it out of the package my wife nearly vomited from the strong odor... from 4 feet away. It really is THAT strong. It will get on your hands/wrist if you touch it. STAY AWAY from this. Read the reviews on this exact same product elsewhere (as I did only after the fact) it is a seriously well known issue with this brand.

Overall Review: It should be illegal to sell this

Not bad, but some real annoyances

ASUS 23" IPS FHD Flicker Free Ultra-low Blue Light IPS Monitor 5ms (GTG) 1920 x 1080 D-Sub, DVI, HDMI VC239H
ASUS 23" IPS FHD Flicker Free Ultra-low Blue Light IPS Monitor 5ms (GTG) 1920 x 1080 D-Sub, DVI, HDMI VC239H

Pros: Decent feature set. 3 input sources makes it easy to hook up multiple sources without as many switches. Color seems quite clear and brightness is fully adjustable down to non-headache inducing levels without being set to 0. No buzzing or humming sound when reducing brightness below 100% which is a fairly common problem in a lot of monitors. The built in speakers actually didn't sound that bad when I tested them briefly, but I'm also not someone who has high standards for audio.

Cons: Button placement on the bottom instead of the front panel is incredibly inconvenient and means that I now must by an arm mount for my second monitor as the buttons are blocked by other things on my desk and need to be used often to switch inputs. Auto-input detection - this is just a horrendous feature... not only is it incredibly annoying to have the monitor auto-switch back if it doesn't detect a signal, but the time before it does so is not adjustable and is way too short while trying to configure various hdmi switches. This requires changing the input back to hdmi multiple times in some cases to get everything working. The bottom of the bezel on the left and right sides juts out so it is not flush with the rest of those sides. while it is only maybe half a centimeter, it means that if you use two side by side, there is a really annoying gap between them and there is no way to make it flush. I can only assume this is a result of the speakers being located in those corners... speakers which most people will never use. Switching input to another input requires at least 4 button presses... compared to my old monitors which required 1. Given that I use this every day that is a pretty annoying design.

Overall Review: Although this does not affect me in any way, the viewing angle from anything outside 120 in front of it is really bad. Even starting to stand up from my desk I notice the bottom of the monitor colors being skewed. This was not an issue with my 5 year old samsung monitors these monitor are replacing. All things considered, I would probably have waited for a different monitor sale given the personal annoyance level of some of the cons I mentioned. Even though the price on these was just over $100 it still probably would have been worth it to wait for something else. That said, if the things I listed are not something that concerns you specifically, it's a good monitor for a good price.

Affordable and effective

VIVO Black Dual LCD Monitor Desk Mount Stand, Stacked Array, Holds Vertical 2 Ultrawide Screens up to 34", STAND-V002T
VIVO Black Dual LCD Monitor Desk Mount Stand, Stacked Array, Holds Vertical 2 Ultrawide Screens up to 34", STAND-V002T

Pros: The material quality is quite good for the price. The height is exactly what is needed to properly stack two 24-27" monitors While the adjustments can be a little annoying and tight to get in place with a monitor attached, they hold extremely well.

Cons: The additional cable clamps tend to pull out of the holes in the pole pretty easily if you have to move the cables at all once they are in there... although they are pretty easy to put back in. The short length of the monitor mounts can make it difficult to bend things at the right angle to fit with other neighboring monitors

Overall Review: Due to the relatively short length of the arms, you would not be able to use this in a corner very effectively. So if you have an L desk you are generally going to have to place this on one side or the other of the corner. In most cases you will need a different, longer, more flexible arm to have a monitor that cuts the corner of an L diagonally

Nice solution where a 5.25 controller isn't an option

Fan Controller
Fan Controller

Pros: Relatively small Small knobs make it easy to allow access outside the case.

Cons: Other than the cables being ugly due to being unsleeved... I can't really think of any.

Overall Review: I use these on a number of 4u cases that simply don't have the room or aren't designed for a 5.25 controller. The small knobs can usually be made to fit out the back grating, or out of some of the predrilled screw holes that I am not using to mount them. Some double sided tape, sticky back velcro, or cable ties, combined with the relatively small size allow these things to be mounted in a variety of ways.

Solid board

MSI MSI Gaming Z97 GAMING 5 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
MSI MSI Gaming Z97 GAMING 5 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Not much to say on this board... it went together with 0 problems, has all the standard ports and headers you would expect. Build worked great and required no debugging.

Cons: Wish more boards would come with 8 sata ports, 6 just isn't enough.

Overall Review: Other than the minor sata port gripe, I can't really say much about this board other than that it has been solid and I have had no problems with it at all. I did read that people had a lot of problems with the killer ethernet software before I bought the board. The recommended solution was to install the "just the driver" package for the ethernet and that is supposed to solve the problem. I just went ahead and installed only the driver anyway, and have not seen any problems... so if there is a problem, that solution does seem to work.
