Most Favorable Review

First SFF build; happy I chose this board.

GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: POSTed immediately, no basic functionality problems at all. Plenty of connectivity for internal, front panel, and external components. Onboard video is at least as good as the discrete graphics card in my older system, and Hybrid Graphics should be great, once I can get a discrete card to install in this one.

Cons: None that I've found so far.

Overall Review: It's always a good idea to at least skim through the manual before installation anyway, but if you intend to run your SATA drives in AHCI mode, DEFINITELY read the manual, and configure this BEFORE installing your operating system. I'm going to have to go back and reinstall Windows, because I neglected to change the configuration before the first installation.

Rosewill RC-411v3 - Network Adapter 10/100/1000 Mbps PCI-Express 1 x RJ45
Rosewill RC-411v3 - Network Adapter 10/100/1000 Mbps PCI-Express 1 x RJ45

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Realtek RTL8168/8111 chip. As stated in my initial review, is same as the onboard chip I was replacing, although I didn't find this out until I saw the information in the "manual" I received with the card. Although I FINALLY got Windoze to recognize the card (several times), I never DID actually get it to work. Under Network Connections, it would SAY it was connected, but I couldn't access anything, and when I would exit the Properties page, it would change to "Disabled," and then it would disappear entirely, requiring the card to be uninstalled and reinstalled, only to repeat the process. However, considering I was trying to get away from Realtek LAN chips anyway, I can't say I was really expecting a lot, once I found out where it came from.

Overall Review: I'll be contacting Newegg to find out if I can return the card for credit toward a different NIC -- one with a chip from someone OTHER THAN Realtek. : /

Huge Capacity, Super Fast

ADATA C103 64GB Retractable USB 3.0 Flash Drive AC103-64G-RBK
ADATA C103 64GB Retractable USB 3.0 Flash Drive AC103-64G-RBK

Pros: 64GB capacity Fast transfer speeds, thanks to USB 3.0

Cons: None of which I'm aware at this point

Overall Review: The only opportunity I've had to use it so far, was to put video evidence of several thefts on it, to turn over to the police as evidence in prosecuting a couple of thieves. Considering how slowly the justice system can proceed sometimes, it may be obsolete by the time I get it back. Transferring the video to the drive went exceptionally quickly, though!

Checking the Warranty

ASUS Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Drive Model BC-12B1ST
ASUS Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Drive Model BC-12B1ST

Pros: Worked great and did its job for over nine months.

Cons: Less than ten months after purchase, it still plays CDs, but has completely ceased to recognize and play Blu-ray Discs, and although it will - RARELY - recognize DVDs, it won't play them.

Overall Review: Ordered this drive because I needed a BD drive, I had a promo code, and among other people ASUS seems to have a reputation for quality and reliability. Unfortunately, in my own experience, I haven't had quite the same luck, and this drive just serves to enforce my own previous experience. I'm going to be contacting ASUS, since it's still under warranty. Hopefully, it'll be taken care of, and if so, I just pray that it lasts more than nine months this time.

Used to be a Great Board

MSI 990FXA-GD80 V2 AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
MSI 990FXA-GD80 V2 AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Great board for over two years. No complaints in all that time.

Cons: About two and a half years after building a brand new computer using this board, the SATA controller failed. Thankfully, it was still under warranty, so I was able to RMA the board to MSI at the cost of $13.xx in shipping, and they shipped me a refurbished board for a replacement. The refurbished board they replaced it with failed within 24 hours of installation.

Overall Review: After failure of the refurbished board MSI sent to replace the original, I gave up and ordered a new board from a different manufacturer. Historically, I have owned two other boards from this other manufacturer, and poor experiences with both boards are the reason I gave MSI a try in the first place, and had been a fan ever since, but now that MSI has failed me, maybe it's time to give this other big-name brand another try.

Not For Huge Cases

CORSAIR Hydro Series H105 Extreme Performance 240mm Liquid CPU Cooler, CW-9060016-WW
CORSAIR Hydro Series H105 Extreme Performance 240mm Liquid CPU Cooler, CW-9060016-WW

Pros: Inexpensive, fairly easy installation (all things considered - see other thoughts), changeable color ring allows me to match the color scheme of my system (black and blue), excellent cooling so far.

Cons: Included fans are loud. Hoses aren't long enough for certain mounting configurations in large cases. Did I mention that the included fans are loud?

Overall Review: My case is an AZZA 9000 Genesis, and I have an MSI Radeon HD7970 Twin Frozr. My intention was to mount the radiator in the top of the case, using the included fans and the case's top fans for a push-pull configuration. Well, from the top of the case, the hoses are not long enough for the contact plate/pump to reach over the GPU to the CPU, no matter which way the radiator is oriented. Fortunately, the case DOES include 120mm/240mm mounts on the bottom - not just 140mm/280mm, and I had another pair of 120mm Corsair fans already, so I was able to set up the push-pull configuration there. Unfortunately, this means having to order a new pair of fans (the ones I grabbed WERE being used elsewhere), less air intake from the bottom (2x120mm instead of 2x140mm), and just a lot of screwing around to find out that the hoses wouldn't reach from the top of the case to the CPU. Had I known ahead of time that I wouldn't be able to mount the radiator in the top of the case, installation would have been simple, and the cooler would have ALMOST had 5 eggs. The fact that the fans are so loud, with no software control, means I haven't really achieved anything in replacing my previous watercooling kit, which still prevents me from giving the kit a full 5 eggs.
