Quality budget system

Lenovo Desktop PC H430 (25581BU) Intel Core i5-2320 8GB DDR3 1TB HDD Intel HD Graphics Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
Lenovo Desktop PC H430 (25581BU) Intel Core i5-2320 8GB DDR3 1TB HDD Intel HD Graphics Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Pros: This is a quality budget system that will meet the needs of most people. It has a nice solid construction. It performs well on most tests. It has an extra drive bay, which was a surprise for a small budget system. It also appears to be fairly generous with ventilation. And, it is mostly quiet. Unless the hard drive or optical drive are in heavy use, you'll struggle to hear it.

Cons: For serious gamers, its graphics will likely disappoint. However, for the rest of us, its more than adequate. The hard drive is a bit noisy for my tastes, but not too bad.

Most Critical Review

Did NOT even install

Nero 12 Platinum
Nero 12 Platinum

Pros: None. Seriously, it did not even install.

Cons: This product never installed. I received an "1158" error, with no other error text, on each attempted installation. I have tried now, for over a week, to resolve the issue with Nero. I responded, immediately, to their requests for information. Reluctantly, I ultimately requested instructions for obtaining a refund. The exact quote from the company, in response, was as follows: "Thank you for your e-mail. Please be advised that we are unable to offer a refund, as defined by our terms of trade. These terms were accepted with the purchase of Nero from our website www.nero.com." Since this is clearly an unreasonable response, I immediately referred this to my credit card company for investigation.

Overall Review: I previously used Nero 7 Ultimate, which was an excellent product. Occasional problems, with even the best product, are to be expected. However, this company has slid so far downhill that they no longer offer a refund for an entirely non-functional installation...a first for me. If you think this is an unfair review, I encourage you to view my other reviews. In almost all cases, I was able to find some positive aspects to the product. In this case, surprisingly, there were none. Please save yourself a headache and purchase one of the many other available products. When I settle on a substitute product, I will come back with a, hopefully, more positive review of it. A final positive thought...while I have NEVER previously complained about a charge, American Express was wonderfully helpful. A true pleasure to do business with.

NOT "Male to Male"

StarTech.com SATA12RA1 1 ft. SATA to Right Angle SATA Serial ATA Cable Male to Male
StarTech.com SATA12RA1 1 ft. SATA to Right Angle SATA Serial ATA Cable Male to Male

Pros: None.

Cons: The title text clearly states that this is a "Male to Male" cable. It is absolutely NOT. It is a standard SATA female-to-female data cable. Contrary to the title, "Male to Male", the picture accurately portrays the product. I wish I'd believed the picture instead of the title.

Dead on arrival

HP Photosmart 7520 Up to 34 ppm Black Print Speed 9600 x 2400 dpi Color Print Quality USB / Wi-Fi InkJet MFC / All-In-One Color Printer
HP Photosmart 7520 Up to 34 ppm Black Print Speed 9600 x 2400 dpi Color Print Quality USB / Wi-Fi InkJet MFC / All-In-One Color Printer

Pros: Makes an excellent door stop.

Cons: Mine was dead on arrival. It kept complaining of a non-existent paper jam, during setup. I suspect this was probably caused by the cheap plastic duplexer that mates poorly with the printer body. Regrettably, I ordered from HP direct. After four hours of effort, I may have succeeded in returning this thing to them. So, needless to say, horrendous customer service. Bottom line, if you gamble, and buy this thing, order from some reputable vendor (like Newegg) that has an easy return policy.

Overall Review: Too bad it didn't work. It had all the features I wanted at a decent price. I seem to be accumulating a collection of printers I don't like. Today, they seem more like vehicles for ink sales, than actual, quality printers.

Works with small issues

Hauppauge WinTV-DCR-2650 Dual Tuner Digital CableCARD Receiver
Hauppauge WinTV-DCR-2650 Dual Tuner Digital CableCARD Receiver

Pros: Works great for most channels / programs.

Cons: For some content providers (in my case, HBO / Cinemax) it suffers an annoying flashing behavior. When this happens, it looks a bit like your program of choice has been recorded in a 70s era discothèque. It almost always happens (to some degree) with these two providers (HBO / Cinemax). However, it seems to also be content sensitive. To a much lesser extent, it happens with some content from other providers like Starz. The documentation is poor about how to perform a firmware upgrade...beyond that performed during the initial installatiion.

Overall Review: Since I am using this as a backup to TiVo, and the product was inexpensive, I have no serious complaints. However, if you are using it as a primary DVR, the "flashing" behavior will probably be unacceptable. Note: I have not yet seen the "flashing" problem with non-premium channels. The device provides limited functionality...even without a cable card. It will not receive analog channels, in this configuration. Also, your channel numbers may not be perfect, in this configuration. My provider is Verizon FiOS. Automated installation failed, but a short call to Verizon fixed all issues (except the premium "flashing" behavior).

Great, cheap, low capacity drive

Western Digital AV-GP WD3200AUDX 320GB IntelliPower 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital AV-GP WD3200AUDX 320GB IntelliPower 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap, quiet, and makes a decent in-case backup for a 256GB SSD.

Cons: For my purposes, none.

Overall Review: I also make an out-of-case backup at less frequent intervals...so I cover the unlikely event where the case bursts into flames :)
