Most Favorable Review

Works out-of-box, will it last?

Western Digital WD Green WD7500AADS 750GB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD7500AADS 750GB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: A short-term review is almost meaningless: It arrived well-packed, wasn't DOA, and installed easily into the home server I'm running it in, paired in gmirror configuration (software RAID 1) with an earlier rev of the same drive, WD7500AADS. The problem with rating it like that is that the measure of a drive's quality, if it's not DOA, is how long it lasts. I've had seemingly OK drives fail within months, and the problem seems to have gotten worse and worse in recent years as drive density has gone up and up. In a couple years I'll know if this is a decent drive, until then it's anyone's guess.

Cons: Unknown. (Why does the form require something here? Sheesh.)

Overall Review: I have a 4.1GB Fujitsu and a 6.4GB Quantum drive from around 1999 which are still in perfect running order; I booted them recently to check something. I have no working drives from more recent hardware generations which have lasted more than 2 or 3 years, but I have plenty of dead Barracudas, WD Caviars, etc. from the last few years. Clearly reliability has been lost with the current capacity increases.

Most Critical Review

Seems like a nice case with one nasty flaw

APEX TX Series TX-606-U3 Black Steel / Plastic MicroATX Tower Computer Case USB3.0 with USB2.0 Adapter Cable 300W Power Supply
APEX TX Series TX-606-U3 Black Steel / Plastic MicroATX Tower Computer Case USB3.0 with USB2.0 Adapter Cable 300W Power Supply

Pros: Seems like a nice case, but I can't really evaluate it because I can't use it for the purpose I bought it for, as a cheap home file server..

Cons: ... because it has one flaw that's fatal at the moment: the cable for the front panel connector is unusually short and won't reach all the way to the back or towards the bottom of the case. That would normally be fine, but in the new motherboard I bought specifically for this case, those connectors aren't on the front edge of the board as usual, they're down on its bottom edge towards the back of the case. This means that the front panel cable on the case WON'T REACH, so I can't plug in a few important connectors like, just for example, the power and reset switch!

Overall Review: I'm knocking major points off my reviews for both the case and the motherboard. This is a serious design flaw in both, which happened to combine to make the combination completely unusable, and unless you know about the potential problem and are sure of the jumper layout on the mobo you'll use in this case, it could bite you too. Since shipping cost me almost as much as the case did, there's no point my paying that much again to ship it back for a refund; similarly for the motherboard. Basically I'm hosed and need to replace one or the other and hope for the best.

Impressive longevity

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 2.4 GHz Socket AM2 89W Processor - ADA4600CUBOX

Pros: Lasted just over 11 years, from spring 2007 - spring 2018 Made a fine desktop system for email/web/editing/etc. even in recent years

Cons: I was never able to upgrade it to Windows 10, probably motherboard or graphics limitations not the CPU, but it's impressive enough that it made a decent Windows 7 machine.

Overall Review: Not that anybody's going to be buying one of these now, but I felt this old workhorse deserved praise for lasting so long. It finally refused to power on this week - either the MB, or the Athlon X2 or both finally gave up the ghost.

Seems like a nice board, one nasty flaw

MSI H81M-P33 LGA 1150 Intel H81 USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
MSI H81M-P33 LGA 1150 Intel H81 USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Seems like a nice board, especially for the money, but I can't evaluate it as yet...

Cons: ... because it has one flaw that's fatal at the moment: the JFP1 pins for the front panel connectors aren't on the front edge of the board, as usual, they're down on the bottom edge towards the back of the case. This means that the fairly short front panel cable on my newly bought case WON'T REACH, so I can't plug in a few important connectors like, just for example, the power and reset switch!

Overall Review: I have an old case on hand which might possibly still work, but is not at all what I wanted to use with this board and its intended application as a file server. I may have to see if it can be shoe-horned in there, but this counts as a huge design flaw and demerit to both the board and the case.

Really great

SilenX EFX-08-12 80mm Effizio Quiet Case Fan
SilenX EFX-08-12 80mm Effizio Quiet Case Fan

Pros: These are the quietest 80mm fans I've tried, and I've tried a bunch. They are much better than I expected them to be, as in really *really* quiet. One thing I wasn't expecting is a neat thing they've done with the mounts, providing an easy to install silicone rubber mounting peg which you can use in place of the usual screws. It's a little hard to describe but basically you just tug it through the screw holes and it pops into place, for an instant anti-vibration mounting. Looks funky, works great.

Cons: None

Overall Review: Remains to be seen how it'll last, but I love it so far.
