Good sound, sturdy

SteelSeries Siberia 3.5mm/ 6.3mm Connector Circumaural Full-Size Headset
SteelSeries Siberia 3.5mm/ 6.3mm Connector Circumaural Full-Size Headset

Pros: The sound is good for the price. I replaced my $100 plus Sennheiser headphones, which no longer worked, with this unit and am satisfied with the purchase. The Siberia sports a beefy two piece cord which will pull apart with undo stretching.

Cons: These are heavy compared to my previous headphones, and the support strap is a bit tight. After wearing them for a couple of hours, I need to take them off for a few minutes. The pads don't do much in keeping out ambient room noise. Finally the mic is a separate unit with a separate cord and a clip for attaching somewhere, so there's something else to fumble with.

Great card with usual software problems

PowerColor Radeon HD 5570 1GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Low Profile Ready Graphics Card AX5570 1GBD3-LH

Pros: Fast compared to the 2400 PRO I replaced. BTW, exact same size as the 2400 PRO.

Cons: I ordered this for my wife's Dell XPS420 Vista machine, and told her confidently that it would take no more than a half hour from start to finish. Foolish me! Ater the usual downloading-the-latest from the ATI site, the usual driver uninstall, and two installs to get the video part working, I lost the sound from the integrated audio. The error message was that no audio driver was installed. I checked the Internet for hints on a few of the tech forums. I had to remove the video driver, search the Microsoft Update Site for the latest audio driver. Get the sound working, and reinstall the graphics driver unchecking the HDMI sound box. It finally worked fine - two hours after I began.

Overall Review: You know the ATI driver story is really getting old. I sometimes think there's only one guy working on graphics drivers - part time.

Worked right out of the box

DFI LP LT X48-T2R LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard
DFI LP LT X48-T2R LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Easy install - no problems. Fair amount of features for the price.

Cons: The Northbridge cooler is a bit tricky due to the tight chip placement between the processor and video card. DFI doesn't include a fan, but I placed the processor fan - Cooler Master Hyper TX2 - next to the cooler and that seems to do the trick. DFI could have done a better job here.

Overall Review: The Northbridge setup better lends itself to water cooling.

Easy installation

VisionTek Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card 900244
VisionTek Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card 900244

Pros: I used the drivers (Catalyst 8.6) that came on the enclosed CD - no problems - very fast for the price.

Cons: runs very warm at 70C (158F) with just Windows Vista!

Overall Review: None.

Fast Gaming card supporting Shader 3.0

DIAMOND Viper Radeon X1950PRO 512MB GDDR3 AGP 8X Graphics Card X1950PRO512AGP
DIAMOND Viper Radeon X1950PRO 512MB GDDR3 AGP 8X Graphics Card X1950PRO512AGP

Pros: I bought this to play Ubisoft's new Splinter Cell Double Agent, which requires an ATI X1000 series video card, and support for Shader 3.0. (Thanks Ubisoft) The card is fast and video is smooth at 1280X1024 with an Athlon 3200+ main processor. This card will extend the life of your AGP motherboard for another eight months.

Cons: I benchmarked this card with (of all things) "Treemark" and it falls slightly behind my ATI X850's performance (239 vs. 276 fps). Another pain was that I put in the driver disk, and after some fancy ATI screens, the wizard couldn't find a driver. I checked the disk and found only Linux drivers! I had to do what I should have done in the first place, which is throw the disk away and go to the website for the latest software (drivers and control panel).

Overall Review: The card appears to require two (2) power connectors, which I did install, but I didn't see any mention of this in the warnings or quick setup.

Good value

ViewSonic 19" Active Matrix, TFT LCD SXGA LCD Monitor 2 ms D-Sub, DVI-D X Series VX922

Pros: Good color and fast response. Great in HL2. No dead or stuck pixels. Not bad for the price.

Cons: Edges are darker than the center, so uniformity could have been better. Tilt adjustment only.

Overall Review: Newegg sent it in its original box with the picture on the front. I missed the initial delivery, so I signed the notice to just leave it by the front door. Thankfully the UPS driver has his wits about him, and left it behind a bush next to the front door, so passers-by couldn't see what he left. Otherwise I don't think it would have been there when I got home.
