good bang for buck

CyberPower Intelligent LCD Series CP600LCD 600VA 340W 4 x 5-15R Battery/Surge Protected 4 x 5-15R Surge Protected Outlets UPS
CyberPower Intelligent LCD Series CP600LCD 600VA 340W 4 x 5-15R Battery/Surge Protected 4 x 5-15R Surge Protected Outlets UPS

Pros: I like this UPS because a) it's inexpensive b) I can turn off the audible alarm. The latter is important because I don't want a UPS that makes noise should the power company drop power when I am trying to sleep. Or any time for that matter. As a bonus, the software shows the Wattage. I tested the software on Windows XP 64 bit and Fedora 17, by unplugging the power cord and to see if they stays quiet and they do stay quiet. I haven't fully tested the functionality of the shutdown / startup features, but you can specify both according to a weekly calender. The shutdown feature definitely works on the XP 64 bit system.

Cons: none

keyboard works but

X-Gene 01021 Black 88 Normal Keys USB Wired Mini Keyboard
X-Gene 01021 Black 88 Normal Keys USB Wired Mini Keyboard

Pros: keyboard works

Cons: keyboard I received isn't exactly the same as that received in photo even though it has X-Gene sticker on back with part# 01021. The most obvious problem is that this keyboard has Fn & Ctrl keyboard swapped. Fn key is on lower left, and Ctrl key just to the right of that. A minor thing like that slows down my typing substantially. The upside is that the Fn key pops out cleanly.

my first case

Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: this case was for my first custom built PC, so I don't have a reference to compare. It seems reasonable good though

Cons: one of the plastic tabs broke on the front panel. Not a big deal, but a little annoying. Also the top fan has bright LEDs, and at night, it can be a bit bothersome. I am tempted to replace the fan with one that isn't illuminated.

Pros: better cpu cooler than the original equipment

Cons: probably overkill for my modest AMD sempron
