almost perfect

Fractal Design Define R3 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case
Fractal Design Define R3 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: attractive, minimalist design sturdy construction has room enough for just about anything very quiet modular fan mounts (moduvent system) let you add cooling as needed while minimizing noise USB 3.0

Cons: The side panels are a bit difficult to put back on since you have to line up all the tabs on the side panels with all of the notches on the case frame. This is not really a con however, since it seems to add to the rigidity of the case, which should help to minimize noise, which is what this case was designed for. In order to remove the front fan dust filters for cleaning you have to remove 4 screws and then remove the entire fan and it's mounting bracket. This is unnecessarily tedious. Why couldn't they just use a removable filter like the one for the PSU filter on the bottom of the case?? There is no case speaker. Why do so many newer cases leave out the case speaker???

Overall Review: I got this on sale on newegg for $80. I think the current price of $109 is perhaps a bit high. In a world populated with mostly gamer cases, it is nice to see Fractal Design making a case designed for thise of us who value quiet computing. This case got a recommended rating from silentpcreview.com

Most Critical Review

Qindows 7 is better than Vista; but Linux is the way to go!

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit

Pros: It comes installed on almost all OEM desktop and laptop computers. Hardware manufacturers must support it or die, so hardware support is universal. Windows 7 is at least better than Vista.

Cons: It is a malware magnet. You can only install it on ONE!! computer. You are forced to use a product key that you are not allowed to loose. It restricts the ways in which you can use your computer and the operating system that you PAID for! You are forbidden to even possess the source code or make any changes to the operating system.

Overall Review: Anyone who is sufficiently motivated can learn to use linux these days. If an older guy like me with no technical background at all can learn how to run Slackware, then surely anyone can!

nice router at a decent price

NETGEAR WNDR3700-100NAS V.5 Wireless Gigabit Open Source Router/ USB port Rangemax 2.4/5 GHz Simultaneous N600 Dual Band IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab
NETGEAR WNDR3700-100NAS V.5 Wireless Gigabit Open Source Router/ USB port Rangemax 2.4/5 GHz Simultaneous N600 Dual Band IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Fast gigabit LAN ports. Good wireless range with no dropped connections. (I have a small 1100 Sq ft house, so I can not attest to the range in larger homes). Automatically offers to update firmware (you can disable this if you wish). Easy to configure wireless security, port forwarding, etc. Runs nice and cool, haven't noticed any overheating issues.

Cons: Blinking lime green LEDs can be a bit annoying!

Overall Review: Hope it lasts a good long time since it is working well enough for me.

good player. works well with linux.

SanDisk Sansa Fuze 1.9" Blue 4GB MP3 / MP4 Player
SanDisk Sansa Fuze 1.9" Blue 4GB MP3 / MP4 Player

Pros: Easy and intuitive to use. This is my first mp3 player. This player is not just for Windows only, which is why I bought it. It is recognized and automounts fine in Slackware linux 13.0, and Ubuntu 9.10. I can copy music files to the player using the linux terminal. The battery life seems to be pretty good. The sound is pretty good using my Sennheiser 457 headphones, and the player has enough power to drive them to a good volume level.

Cons: I guess I better not loose the proprietary usb cord that it comes with or my new mp3 player becomes a paperwight. A standard off the shelf usb cord would have been better. The supplied earphones are not very good. I am looking into purchasing a better set of earphones for listening on the go. At home the Sennheiser headphones work well.

very good 2.0 system

M-AUDIO Studiophile AV 30 2.0 Compact Desktop Speaker System
M-AUDIO Studiophile AV 30 2.0 Compact Desktop Speaker System

Pros: These speakers are the best desktop speakers I have owned. I have tried a good many 2.0 and 2.1 speakers in this price range. I am not a fan of most 2.1 systems. Most of the 2.1 systems I have tried have a lot of highs, a boomy, muddy sounding bass, and the midrange is lost somewhere in between. These M-Audios have a clean and well balanced sound. There is not a lot of bass, but you should not expect a lot of deep bass from a small 2.0 system. If you want deep bass go with a 2.1 system with a subwoofer. These speakers are very good for music, especially if you listed to classical and jazz. These speakers do a pretty good job getting the midrange right to my ears. That is where most of the music is. The headphone and aux input jacks on the left speaker are handy too.

Cons: The audio cord that connects the left speaker to the computer is only about 5 feet long. So your PC will need to be placed within a 5 foot reach of the left speaker, or you will need a mini jack extension cord. The bass is limited, but this should be expected. So not much of a con here. Don't use the bass boost switch though. You simply can't force small speakers to give you a lot of bass. The sound will become congested and distort if you crank up the volume. However, since the speakers are sitting on your desk a few feet from your space they are plenty loud enough
