967mhz & climbing

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL4D-2GBHK
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL4D-2GBHK

Pros: Overclocks great -- currently at 967mhz, 4-4-3-5 and stable at only 1.9v! Tested there for several weeks. I've also temporarily overclocked higher with increased voltage but am not interested in cooking my system all the way up, & found fans spinning too much for my taste so backed the system back down to 967mhz. IMHO best bang-for-the-buck compared to others. For example - just dropped in the slightly cheaper ($75 after rebate)Geil 4-4-4-(12) competitor to the same box (Asus P5W-DH) and instantly froze despite claimed reviews over over 1000ghz. This G-Skill competes with MUCH more expensive ram. Save your money with this set. I'm not in the habit of writing reviews but have had experience with hardward dating back to 1981 - so you can trust the reasoning behind my reveiw. Simply a quality product which I feel satisfied in purchasing and wanted to share my experience. Excellent flexibility on overclocking.

Cons: ~$100 vs. others at $75-$90 for Cas-4. Considering the flexibility this ram works from the get-go and does what it claims, so easily worth the extra $15-$25 in my opinion.

Overall Review: Compete on quality or price? G-Skill, advertise a discount or rebate~!

click, click, click - junk

Seagate BarraCuda LP ST31500541AS 1.5TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate BarraCuda LP ST31500541AS 1.5TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: err.. banking on Seagate's previous drive business these drives 'ought' to be good???? WRONG

Cons: Newegg is great... fast delivery, (this one) packed right, good price. Seagate on the other hand has lost my business. This is one of a number of 1.5tb drives from them, & up to now was hopeful they'd get over their quality issues ---- (see hanging issues on prev. 1.5tb Seagates). So this new green model arrives. I ghost over 300gb. Next day I try to boot it. CLICK, CLICK, CLICK. Try again... same. Again... SAME. Took ~12 boots to finally spin up long enough to attempt to kill my data. Bad Seagate.

Overall Review: Exactly what are the chances of receiving drive after drive bad from Seagate if they have ANY form of quality control? I would suggest that Seagate is banking on consumers simply trashing their drives instead of the reckless merry-go-round RMA's you see from other purchasers. Read them. It's common for 5,6, 7 bad drives in a row once you start returning them under warranty to Seagate. IF YOU BUY THIS DRIVE, be warned!! Only use it where your data isn't important! ALSO - IN THE FIRST 30 DAYS push Newegg for a 100% refund and maybe they'll eventually stop carrying bad products until Seagate gets their act together. Seagate has lost my business until then AND doubt I'll ever try them again. & this said from some 20 years of hardware business with thousands of Seagates sold/installed.

Toshiba or Seagate?

SAMSUNG D3 Station 5TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D501TDB Black

Pros: I agree this is a far better way to buy Seagate backup drives coming with 3 year warranty vs 1 year for the same drive. However, why would you buy Seagate (5900 rpm and heavy losses in quality each year) when you can buy Toshiba (7200 rpm and higher quality, same 3 year warranty)? You can find the Toshiba for $10 more ($129 shipped) and their prices have been steadily coming down to compete with Seagate. So for higher quality why risk your data on Seagate? Don't get me wrong, these drives aren't a bad choice. I have three of them without a hiccup for minimal use backup drives. But Toshiba is clearly a better buy right now. I do not see Seagate making efforts to ensure they deliver quality and all you have to do is look at the way they pack them and the reviews on failed drives.

Cons: Simple case, no power switch

Overall Review: As of this date, you can find the 5 tb Samsung for $119 shipped, and the 5 tb Toshiba for $129 ( google it, not all trustworthy deals are on Newegg, though I use them for 90%) The Toshiba drives are green and spin fast (hot) only when under demand so heat on 7200 rpm isn't a concern, more a plus over mild 5900rpm max with Samsung/Seagate

long & short

SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black
SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: - Drive inside is Seagate & comes with a 3-year warranty. - Price- Usually you can find these for $120-$125 (lately, 8-2014) which is cheaper than Seagate's own. That's as cheap as I purchased Segate's 4tb back in 2013 black friday. - Decent speed in transfer

Cons: -backup software CRASHES winXP with current service packs (with no special drivers, nothing extreme). (am returning because of it) -there is no external power switch nor green 'off' for the hard-drive. Plug it in and it runs full-on. Unlike Seagate's 4tb which powers down when not searched.

Overall Review: For an always-on external hard-drive, if you can find them cheap they're a decent option. Personally I like the box powering down when not in use. I was a bit upset with the thing crashing my STABLE xp system - as it was the purpose I bought the drive, to back it up. But I got it back with system restore. I'll do it the hard way next time without taking risks on 3'rd party, unknown, BAD backup software. Other reviews alluded to issues and I should have sided with caution.

Foolish purchase

Seagate STBM4000100 4TB Business Storage 1-Bay NAS
Seagate STBM4000100 4TB Business Storage 1-Bay NAS

Pros: Easily managed and found with win7.

Cons: Where do I start? Straight out of the box the power connection had very poor construction quality. Finding the words 'Made In China' relieved the mystery. The power connection later became so poor that if you even stepped next to the unit on our hardwood floors the vibration would reset the drive. Copying 200gb of music files somehow allocated 700gb! AND took 3 days to transfer, the second day giving up on the network and directly connecting to the USB slot, BUT zero speed increase. Within the week the system refused the admin password and would allow my sub user (with admin privileges) to view more than the folder structures. A complete waste of 3 good days copying and configuring, ending with a useless paperweight, seized from the poor quality in construction ( the power connection finally toasted and you could hear it shorting just by touching the box). Lastly, this box is NOT Xperia compatible. Not a huge deal with most of my network win7, and drive did show up and configure easily from those. All you can do from xp is view and download, not manage.

Overall Review: This product was rushed to market without concern for quality. 4tb is a lot of data to lose or gamble on truly pathetic engineering. I paid $209 shipped and thought at first it was a smart purchase for an my own cloud or home movie/music storage. Not so. A waste go valuable data and time. How much is your time worth? As a side, last week I noticed Costco selling another version of this as a 4tb NAS with everyday price of $199. Tempting but I've been fooled once. Shame on Seagate. Fooled twice equals shame on me so I'll pass until quality improves.

Obihai OBi202 VoIP Phone Adapter with Router – Google Voice, SIP & T.38 Fax Support
Obihai OBi202 VoIP Phone Adapter with Router – Google Voice, SIP & T.38 Fax Support

Pros: So my brother has been using GV and the older Obi's for 2 years now. I'm the techie in the family but have learned to let others cut their way with technology and jump on if I see benefits in others. Was I dragging my feet with this one... as it paid for itself in (wait for it) ONE MONTH! Our bill went from $90 down to $20, for internet only.

Cons: takes roughly an hour to go through the setup (with GV, OBitalk, etc. pair it with your gmail for voicemail), maybe longer if you're doing it for family (they all talk while you work)
