Excellent, quiet, CPU cooler

Dynatron K17 92mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler for Intel LGA Socket 1151 / 1150 / 1155 / 1156
Dynatron K17 92mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler for Intel LGA Socket 1151 / 1150 / 1155 / 1156

Pros: This unit has an elegant and clean mounting system, it is easy to install, runs very quietly, and keeps my Intel Core i7-4771 Haswell CPU nice and cool.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: The fan comes with self-adhering steel mounting plates that fit cleanly on the back of the mother board. No instructions are included and the correct orientation of the plates is not immediately self-evident. So one should pause and think for a moment and make sure one has the geometry correct before attaching the plates to the motherboard. The heat exchanger block contains thermal compound printed on it. For good measure, I added a small bead of Arctic Silver thermal paste and this seemed to work well. Before screwing the heat exchanger in place, the fan must be snapped off to provide access to the screws. Once the heat exchanger is mounted, the fan can be snapped back on again. The mounting screws are held in place by small springs that facilitate installation and screw tightening. I tightened the four screws in sequence, ½ turn at a time to achieve even pressure application against the processor. Very simple and elegant. My build components are as follows: Antec Gaming Series One black steel case, GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD3H motherboard, Intel Core i7-4771 Haswell 3.5GHz LGA 1150 processor, Dynatron K17 92mm CPU cooler, Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit, COUGAR A760 model CGR B3-760 760W power supply, CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 memory, LG Black Blu-ray Burner model WH14NS40, LG Black Blu-ray ROM model UH12NS30, AFT PRO-57U USB 3.0 ports and card reader, ASUS Xonar Essence ST PCI Audio Card, Crucial M500 240GB SATA 2.5" 7mm SSD, Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB HDD, Western Digital WD Black WD2002FAEX 2TB HDD, StarTech 1 Port PCIe IDE Controller card (for old recycled IDE hard drives), StarTech PEX1394B3LP PCIe IEEE1394 card, U.S. Robotics USR5638 V.92 PCIe Fax modem.

Works well, easy to install

StarTech.com 3 Port 2b 1a Low Profile 1394 PCI Express FireWire Card Adapter Model PEX1394B3LP

Pros: I am writing to correct a typo in my previous review. The phrase "simple and an expensive" should read "simple and inexpensive." Sorry about that.

Cons: None

Inexpensive Extra SATA Port

StarTech.com SATAPOWPLAT1 1 Port SATA and Power Slot Plate Adapter
StarTech.com SATAPOWPLAT1 1 Port SATA and Power Slot Plate Adapter

Pros: I needed an extra external SATA port for the purpose of testing hard drives. This simple back plate adapter does the trick. No complaints. This is the only adapter I. could find that provided both a signal slot and a power slot.

Cons: None

Overall Review: An integrated SATA signal + power cable must be purchased separately.

Nice Little IDE Controller

StarTech 1 Port PCI Express IDE Controller Adapter Card
StarTech 1 Port PCI Express IDE Controller Adapter Card

Pros: I had two old IDE HDDs that I wanted to "recycle" in my newest computer build. Since my new motherboard has no IDE headers, this card did the trick. It was simple to install, required no drivers, and works fine. I can now access these old drives using my Win7 system. The attached HDDs were automatically detected by the BIOS

Cons: None

Overall Review: I wanted my old drives to both be running as "Slaves." After reading the spec sheets for the drives, I concluded that my Seagate Barracuda 200 GB ST3200822A drive should have no jumpers (correct conclusion) and that my WD 320 GB WD3200AAJB drive should have a jumper cross pins 4 and 9 (incorrect conclusion). With this configuration, the system did not recognize the WD drive. The WD drive was recognized after I removed the jumper. Note that the included IDE cable was too short for my purpose. I purchased a 24" cable separately. My build components are as follows: Antec Gaming Series One black steel case GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD3H motherboard Intel Core i7-4771 Haswell 3.5GHz LGA 1150 processor Dynatron K17 92mm CPU cooler Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit COUGAR A760 model CGR B3-760 760W power supply CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR memory LG Black Blu-ray Burner model WH14NS40 LG Black Blu-ray ROM model UH12NS30, AFT PRO-57U USB 3.0 ports and card reader ASUS Xonar Essence ST PCI Audio Card Crucial M500 240GB SATA 2.5" 7mm SSD Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB HDD Western Digital WD Black WD2002FAEX 2TB old/recycled HDDs: WD 320 GB WD3200AAJB and Seagate 200 GB ST3200822A StarTech 1 Port PCIe IDE Controller card (for old recycled IDE hard drives) StarTech PEX1394B3LP PCIe IEEE1394 card U.S. Robotics USR5638 V.92 PCIe Fax modem StarTech SATAPOWPLAT1, back plate adapter for a single port SATA Signal and Power slot

Nice little modem

U.S. Robotics USR5638 V.92 Faxmodem 56Kbps PCI Express
U.S. Robotics USR5638 V.92 Faxmodem 56Kbps PCI Express

Pros: This modem was easy to install and works as expected. I downloaded the driver from the US Robotics website and it is installed without difficulty. Now, I can send and receive faxes from my computer conveniently. Email does not work for everything -- it is nice to have the fax function.

Cons: This card only contains one JR19 socket. I would prefer two sockets so that I could pass the phone signal through the card and on to my telephone. I got around this problem by simply plugging a signal splitter into the wall -- and all is well. Also, driver installation was a little odd. The driver installed just fine, but the user (me) receives no message at the end that the installation was finished and successful. The installation program simply shuts down without communicating any information about installation outcome.

Good 760W Power Supply

COUGAR A-Series A760 (CGR B3-760) 760 W ATX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Ultra Quiet Power Supply
COUGAR A-Series A760 (CGR B3-760) 760 W ATX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Ultra Quiet Power Supply

Pros: This power supply provides plenty of power for my system that includes several expansion cards, 5 hard drives, and multiple USB peripherals. It has functioned as expected and I have had no problems with it. The power connector cables provide a 24-pin (20+4) ATX main power connector, a 12V 2x4-pin CPU power connector, SATA plugs, Molex plugs, and PCI card plugs. The fan is whisper quiet.

Cons: The power connector cables did not include any Mini-Molex (Berg Plug, or Floppy Drive Plug) connectors. I needed an adapter cable for this purpose. Also, the mounting screw holes in the power supply did not line up with the screw holes in my case. A little creativity was required to secure the power supply in the case. It would be nice if the manufacturers of computer cases and power supplies could standardize the location of the screw holes!
