Nice board

GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD3 LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD3 LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: A high-quality board, looks great, works perfectly, and has excellent documentation.

Cons: None really. You might want to move up to the UD4 or UD7 if you want the extras. I didn't need them for this build.

Overall Review: Windows 7 would not install until I set the graphics configuration in BIOS since I have a video card and there is a gpu in the cpu which is not used. To do the setting go to "Advanced BIOS Features" and look for "Init Display First". Change the setting from the default "PCI" to "PCIEx16". Qwest ADSL Support Doubtful

NETGEAR DG834G 802.11b/g Wireless-G Router up to 54Mbps with Built-In DSL Modem
NETGEAR DG834G 802.11b/g Wireless-G Router up to 54Mbps with Built-In DSL Modem

Pros: This is a very attractive and compact DSL modem/router with all the features you would normally want including wireless, 4 ethernet ports, and good management software accessible as a webpage.

Cons: This modem does not work with Qwest ADSL service in the US. Qwest only reluctantly gives support for the modem. When we got it set up, everything functioned (IP address, ping, DNS) as expected, but internet (http) does not work. Netgear support finally told us that this model only works in United Kingdom, not USA. After several days hassling with this, and several harrowing hours on the phone, we'll RMA and go back to Actiontec.

Overall Review: If Netgear support is correct and this model only works in the UK, why is it being sold in the USA? If they are incorrect, what value is their tech support? Furthermore, what does it mean on the box when they say "guaranteed Qwest compatible"? Netgear tech support disconnected at that point in the call.

Exceptional Quality

Western Digital WD Green WD20EARS 2TB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD20EARS 2TB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: These drives are excellent for storing audio, video, and other data. I have installed and used several in the past few months on Windows 7. There have been no problems. The drives run cool and reasonably fast. Perfect for the application.

Cons: These drives should not be used as system drives where you store operating system and application software. They are too slow.

Overall Review: I have read many of the comments on these drives. Most, if not all, problems stem from (1) installing on Windows XP without proper care. advanced format drives need special attention with formatting on older operating systems. (2) installing in a RAID system. don't be surprised if they fail. they were not designed for RAID. A further point: these are 1 TB drives, not 1 TiB drives. They format to 931 GiB which your computer will report as 931 GB. (See wikipedia for more info on TiB and GiB.) Always backup your important data. These drives are cheap enough. Buy two and use one for backup. You will have a happier life.

Test with Prime95 (follow-up)

GIGABYTE GA-P55-USB3 LGA 1156 Intel P55 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-P55-USB3 LGA 1156 Intel P55 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This is simply a follow-up to my previous review. It turns out the memory was at fault, not the motherboard. Gigabyte deserves a 5 star rating on this board. The BIOS settings are great.

Cons: Some limitations on multiple graphics cards, no SATA III, 16 GB RAM max, upgrade limited because LGA 1156 is not used by the i7 processors. All of them I was already aware of.

Overall Review: For those of you who test your builds with Prime95, there is a "Small FFT" setting and a "Blend" setting. Blend is the default. If it fails, try "Small FFT." If that goes well, you probably have a memory problem. To test memory directly, use memtest86+. I tried it with both sticks, then with each stick separately. It was very obvious which stick was good and which was bad.

GIGABYTE GA-P55-USB3 LGA 1156 Intel P55 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Nice looking, easy to use product. Gigabyte is always reliable.

Cons: This board has problems passing the Prime95 stress test. You get a rounding error 0.5 instead of 0.4. I believe the problem is real (google "p55 usb3 prime95 gigabyte" to find others with the same trouble). I am not overclocking. I believe there is or will be a solution. Just wish I knew the answer before investing 4 more hours into it.

Overall Review: New system running on default BIOS settings, then on completely standard BIOS settings. i5-750 CPU G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 64-bit Windows 7

Solid Construction

ZALMAN CNPS9900ALED 120mm 2 Ball Low-noise Blue LED CPU Cooler
ZALMAN CNPS9900ALED 120mm 2 Ball Low-noise Blue LED CPU Cooler

Pros: Installed in a system with Gigabyte P35-DS3P motherboard and Antec P180 case that was recently upgraded from E6850 Core 2 Duo (65W) to Q9650 Core 2 Quad (130W). The fan is high quality construction. There was no problem fitting it in the case. It cleared the power supply and everything on the motherboard. The thermal state is really stable now. With EasyTune fan controller, it is nearly silent idling, but noisy when the processor is stressed.

Cons: There is a back plate required on Socket 775 processors. I had to remove the motherboard and disconnect most of the cables to get this installed. It took about 30 minutes. It is quiet, but doesn't really qualify as "silent".

Overall Review: CPU temps dropped about 6 degrees. However, I was able to remove two extra case fans because case temps dropped too. Also graphics board temp dropped because the case was cooler.
