Most Favorable Review

Great case if you want to convert an optical drive to external. See notes on plug!

OWC Mercury Pro External USB 3.0 Enclosure for 5.25" Blu-ray, DVD, and CD Reader/Writers Model OWCMR3UKIT
OWC Mercury Pro External USB 3.0 Enclosure for 5.25" Blu-ray, DVD, and CD Reader/Writers Model OWCMR3UKIT

Pros: Sturdy all aluminum case. Supports USB 3.1 for fast transfer. Easy install. If you've ever installed a drive, you can probably do this without reading the directions. Pefect if you have an old optical drive that you want to make external. Quiet operation, drive is isolated by rubber grommets in mounting holes. Laptop style power supply (box is in middle of power cable). Reasonably priced.

Cons: Comes supplied with UK style power plug, the adapter for US is included in shipping box - be sure to look for it! Interior cable a bit cramped in the case. USB cable a bit short (24"). You will have to place your drive fairly close to your PC.

Overall Review: The biggest problem with this unit is the UK style plug. They do provide an adapter The adapter was wrapped in bubble wrap separate from the product box, don't miss it when you unpack the shipping carton. With the adapter, the plug is quite large. You might have trouble inserting it in a crowded power strip. If you have an extra US style power cord with a "figure 8" connector (common on printers and laptops), I would substitute that for the cord provided.

Cheap Secure Storage

Mediasonic HUR3-su3s3 RAID 0, 1,JBOD 2 3.5" Drive Bays USB 3.0, eSATA 2 Bay Raid Enclosure
Mediasonic HUR3-su3s3 RAID 0, 1,JBOD 2 3.5" Drive Bays USB 3.0, eSATA 2 Bay Raid Enclosure

Pros: Inexpensive Supports USB 3.0 Supports 3TB drives Stable and reliable (so far) Good Cooling Hardware RAID

Cons: Limited documentation No way to control sleep mode.

Overall Review: Bought this as secure storage for my photos. Running RAID 1 with two 3TB WD Green drives. No issues so far - absolutely stable (running Windows 8.1). Documentation is limited to a quick installation sheet (can be viewed on the Mediasonic web site). The sheet refers to a user manual that , per the Mediasonic forum, does not actually exist. Decent e-mail support from Mediasonic, however. Installation takes you through the hardware setup. No instructions for using the Windows drive manager to initialize and assign a drive letter to your drives. If you don't know how to do this, you will have to look elsewhere. Probably not a good choice the technically challenged. Drive goes to sleep when computer is turned off or after a long period of not using the drive (an hour or more). Takes about 5 seconds or so to fully restart. This is hardwired into the box and can't be changed. Not a problem for me, but it may annoy some. The box has three fans that are temperature controlled. Usually only one fan runs. Bottom line - for the price it is an excellent RAID solution. Update 12/18: After owning this for four years, I have never had a problem with this drive case. Still running great. Highly recommended for secure storage.

Everything you want

Rosewill Armer RX304-APU3-35B - External 3.5" SATA III 6 Gb/s Hard Drive Enclosure - USB 3.0 & eSATA Connection, Aluminum Body, 80 mm Variable Speed Fan with On / Off Switch, LED Display Panel Supports UASP
Rosewill Armer RX304-APU3-35B - External 3.5" SATA III 6 Gb/s Hard Drive Enclosure - USB 3.0 & eSATA Connection, Aluminum Body, 80 mm Variable Speed Fan with On / Off Switch, LED Display Panel Supports UASP

Pros: Fan cooled, solid construction, includes everything you need, supports SATA III and large drives, temp and fan display.

Cons: Minor complaints: 1meter USB cord (I wish they would make it 1.5m). HDD light is on when drive is idle then turns off when drive is accessed (should be other way around). Really can only be used in vertical position due to display and lack of feet.

Overall Review: I've purchase several enclosures and this is the best ever by far. Large cooling fan with temperature sensor and variable speed based on temperature. Some fan noise, but not too bad at normal temps. Really solid case made from a single, thick aluminum extrusion. Temp and fan speed are displayed. Can be used with a USB 3.0 or SATA connector. Max transfer rate is 6 GBPS with SATA III and 5 GBPS with USB 3.0 (USB limitation, not the enclosure). Includes all cables and a SATA riser to get your spare internal SATA connector to the rear panel of your desktop. Even includes hard drive screws and a screwdriver. Really pappy with this product!

Good with limitations

ORICO 2-Outlet Power Strip with Surge Protector, Built-in 5 Ft. Cord, 4 USB Intelligence Charging Ports (2 x 5V 2 .4A + 2 x 5V 1A) for iPhone, iPad, Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge, Nexus and More (TPC-2A4U-BK)

Pros: Works well with Apple and Samsung products (chip enabled). Two each tablet (2.4A) and phone (1A) charging ports. Two surge protected AC outlets (versions with more outlets are available). On/off switch with indicator light lets you leave this plugged in when not in use.

Cons: A bit bulky for travel. Does not charge my ASUS TF300T tablet.

Overall Review: I bought this thinking that I would use it for travel. It's a bit bulky for that with a heavy duty power cord. Three prong plug makes it somewhat unsuitable for international travel. As a home charging station, it works well, particularly for Apple and Samsung devices which it has a smart chip for. Doesn't charge my ASUS tablet (very few third party chargers do), so I still have to use my old charger.

Excellent Adapter

Rosewill RCAD-11003 USB3.0 Adapter For IDE/SATA Device
Rosewill RCAD-11003 USB3.0 Adapter For IDE/SATA Device

Pros: USB 3.0 3TB Drives (at least) SATA or IDE Not many parts.

Cons: Limited specs, unsure of maximum drive size. Must switch manually between SATA and IDE

Overall Review: Bought this to use for running occasional backups onto bare drives. It is also useful for wiping or recovering data from old drives. It supports USB 3.0. Worked well with a 3TB WD SATA III drive. Specs don't mention a maximum drive size. I bought this to replace a similar USB 2 device. Unlike that device there are only three parts to this - the power unit, the drive cord and a small SATA cord. The drive cord has a switch to manually switch between SATA and IDE. Don't forget to check it before connecting. The power unit has an on-off switch on the cord. This is a nice feature, allowing you to make all connections before powering up the drive. All in all, this does everything I wanted well and doesn't have any real drawbacks.

Good drive

Cavalry CAUA 250GB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive PC-Ready CAUA37250
Cavalry CAUA 250GB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive PC-Ready CAUA37250

Pros: Solid case. Runs cools - case does not get warm. Preformatted NTFS, just plug it in and go.

Cons: Cheap wall wart power supply. Bright LED (blue power, red disk access).

Overall Review: Drive has no fan (not needed). Western Digital drive inside (on mine anyway). GOOD DRIVE, GOOD PRICE. THANKS!
