TP-LINK TL-SG108, a nice little switch

TP-Link 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch | Ethernet Splitter | Sturdy Metal w/ Shielded Ports | Plug-and-Play | Traffic Optimization | Unmanaged (TL-SG108)
TP-Link 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch | Ethernet Splitter | Sturdy Metal w/ Shielded Ports | Plug-and-Play | Traffic Optimization | Unmanaged (TL-SG108)

Pros: Fast boot up time Low-voltage power supply Auto-sensing ports (a standard today) 9k Jumbo Frame support Good power efficiency (less than 1 watt of power consumption with 2 active ports) Faster than my other switches at establishing a connection. Minimal packaging, there was no extra bloat and fanciness that I’m going to throw out anyway. QoS Support

Cons: 5 year warranty (as opposed to lifetime) I would have liked to see dual LED’s for a gigabit connection instead of one.

Overall Review: Since this is supposed to be a review from an eggxpert, I did my best to torture this switch to provide the most stressful testing I could. The best way I could think of doing that is by taking this to work and temporarily swap it for the current blue painted metal housed 8port professional grade unmanaged switch. I work at a university with a helpdesk that provides computer support to more than 20,000 undergrad and graduate students. Our helpdesk moves between 500GB and 2TB of data through our little blue 8port switch every day. From backing up data (music, pictures, documents, movies, programs and research data of all types) to our NAS then pulling new system images down during OS reinstall, our switch usually starts to work moving data at 8 a.m. and stops when we close up shop 13 hours later. I left this at work for a week before bringing it home for my own set of tests. I ask all of our technicians to do their best to break this during daily use and it just never happened. All of them had very positive feedback on the switch and a few mentioned they saw improved performance over our aging solution. For my set of tests, I set this switch up as part of a single and multi-switch network between a file-server, 3 desktops, laptop and router. files were moved between different machines at 10/100 and gigabit. At 10/100 all transfers had 99%+ network utilization and 91%+ throughput. Averaging 11.4 of 12.5MB/s. up and down stream. Gigabit tests were impressive too. Reading from the raid arrays (5x500GB and 3x1000GB) on the server yielded bursts above 200MB/s and average downloads between 80 and 90MB/s for files between 750MB and 2GB. When writing files back to the server there were a few very suspicious hang-ups, during the file transfers, but they couldn't be isolated to the switch, but in case you were wondering, most of the time I saw transfers around 65-80MB/s (writing to RAID 5 arrays), but the transfers on multiple occasions did dip to ~800KB/s. Finally, there were no hangups with day to day Internet traffic, or video streaming. I would like to have tested it with some games, but I had to take a trip out of state during the review process and didn't have time. In all if you can get this switch for a good price, don't hesitate to snap it up, it's a good buy. If you can find a switch with a lifetime warranty for the same price, it's the only thing I would recommend more than this. This is the second TPLink product I have owned and I have been pretty satisfied with both. Lastly, I rarely give out a 5/5 rating to a product, if this switch had a lifetime warranty, it probably would have earned it, because I like a company that will stand behind a product enough to say that I will only have to buy it once.

Good for streaming music, Low throughput overall

Netgear Powerline AV 200Mbps Pass Thru + USB Port (XAUB2511)
Netgear Powerline AV 200Mbps Pass Thru + USB Port (XAUB2511)

Pros: Ability to connect music or bring Internet connectivity to any room in the house, without costing you an outlet or causing issues with WiFi adapters in tight spaces, several floors above (or below) your router.

Cons: Throughput in EVERY test I did was low. In some (very few) cases too low to stream movies from a file server. I wouldn't use this for anything except streaming music or basic Internet connectivity. You probably won't have much luck taking advantage of that theoretical 200Mbps bandwidth for transferring data.

Overall Review: I've had this product for almost a month now and it's been tested in several rooms in the house and under a variety of test conditions and at no point have I been able to achieve more than 15% of the theoretical maximum data transfer rate of 200Mbps. These work great fro streaming music from my phone or tablet through the WiFi to my either of my Receivers (provided I move the adapter of course) But the rest of the networking claims in the technical specifications I could not achieve or even come close to. We don't buy a networking products to be let down on the core of what the product is for (Networking). My house was built in 2000, so fairly new by US housing standards, and this was tested in several circuits in my house and was a letdown on the core of what the product is supposed to do. This will be a great product if expectations are low i.e. you want to bring <15Mb/s internet connection to a computer and also stream music, this will fit that requirement, but when it comes to actually functioning for networking purposes it will fall short. On a side note in my personal and professional experience I have noticed that most powerline networking adapters fall short of their specifications by a significant margin. It's not isolated to this product or this brand, I believe much of this is due to the nature of the wiring in our homes and not the products themselves. Don't get too excited by high numbers in the marketing literature and product description. Expect that your adapter will be on the order of 10-15% efficient, and your latency may also be artificially high too.

Over a year, still a great buy

TP-Link TL-WR1043N 450 Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router
TP-Link TL-WR1043N 450 Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router

Pros: Wireless N DETACHABLE ANTENNAS Gigabit LAN ports IP QoS USB Port

Cons: In the ~1.5 years I have owned this router, it has needed to be reset a small handful of times because of wireless troubleshooting (annoying, but better than ANY consumer grade router/AP I have used).

Overall Review: The user interface could use some polish, but I have to access it so rarely to make changes or fix problems that I rarely notice.

Sunbeam=FIRE

Sunbeam RHK-BA Rheobus 5.25" Bay 4 Channel 20W Fan Controller Panel (Black)
Sunbeam RHK-BA Rheobus 5.25" Bay 4 Channel 20W Fan Controller Panel (Black)

Pros: 4 Controller knobs Switches on the 10K ohm Pot's brushed aluminum knobs

Cons: LED's are Too bright VERY POOR soldering Poor construction Will set your computer on FIRE (and I mean smoke and a very bright orange glow coming from your computer, almost as bright as the LED's)

Overall Review: I got this controller back in May and in July it failed, catching on fire inside my case. I showed it to my friend who's an electrical engineer and he said it was one of the worst designs he has ever seen and the workmanship on this controller was absolutely substandard.

Meh

OCZ Technology Eclipse Black USB Wired Laser Gaming Mouse
OCZ Technology Eclipse Black USB Wired Laser Gaming Mouse

Pros: Laser tracking, adjustable DPI (2 way up or down on a single toggle, you don't have to cycle through all the settings), quiet scrolling (it still clicks but just enough so you know you have moved the wheel), Adjustable weights. Decent cord length, Super smooth teflon feet

Cons: The buttons on this mouse feel cheap and loud ESPECIALLY the ones on the side. The no-slip grip coating is far from no slip. Personally the ergonimics don't fit my hand, and I have small hands for a guy. I actually have to hold the mouse near the back so my fingers barely reach the buttons. Personally I think the LED's for the DPI level are to bright. It seems like every manufacturer is using super bright LED's cause it's cool. Pretty soon they will be using luxeon LED's on stuff and really making devices with LED's obnoxious.

Overall Review: I haven't tried the software for this mouse yet, but I have heard fairly good things. you should be able to customize the color of the scroll wheel with it too, I just wish you could dim the LED's for the dpi indicator or change their color cause blue isn't that cool anymore (never was in my opinion)

It works ok so far

Thermaltake CL-W0075 Liquid Cooling System
Thermaltake CL-W0075 Liquid Cooling System

Pros: Water cooling, Drasticly reduced tempratures. I'm really happy with the performance and most importantly SILENCE. My computer makes almost no noise. I can actually hear.

Cons: the radiato could be smaller and more fluid and 1/2" tubing would be cool. Pump was DOA, but I fixed it. (these pumps really aren't all that high quality and having experience with much larger pumps I took this one apart and wasn't able to get it to consistently start back up, but it did start more frequently after I took some red Devil (bicycle grease) and lubed the plastic shaft that the impeller rotates on. Seriously the pumps aren't that good for this system.

Overall Review: I set this system up last night after getting my Danger den full cover VGA block. it dropped the temps of my CPU by 12degrees F and my vid card by 3-5 idle (~20 maxed) I found this kit at Rat Shack on close out for ~80 and found the DD 3870X2 waterblock on eb@y. and set the system up last night and if the performance keeps up I will be really satisfied with this, I wasn't expecting the 1 radiator to handle the heat from my system but it does, and right now I have a maximus extreme, Q9550 (@3.2) and an Asus EAH HD3870 X2 and this has dropped their temps drasticly and it's almost SILENT. The video card I have does not fit the Danger Den water block I had to significantly modify it lastnight with a milling bit and my roomated drill press so be forwarned, but overall I would say this is a pretty average product, I just hope my pump doesn't fail.
