Works for me
Pros: Small, good capacity for a thumb drive
Cons: sliding cover doesn't lock into the open position- if you hold the big part of the body when trying to insert it, the cover slides forward instead of the usb connector plugging in. Newegg's free shipping takes a ridiculously long time, and their packing leaves a lot to be desired...
Overall Review: The device itself works fine. It's OK on write speed- not fast, but I've seen slower. Read speed works for my needs, so there's no complaints there. My biggest complaint lies with Newegg's shipping. This order shipped from Edison, NJ, which is about an hour's drive from my location. I received a ship notice with a tracking number nice and fast, but after that- nothing. It took over a week to get here, from a location just one hour away. I'm sure this was due to the combination of DHL and USPS that Newegg uses for their economy shipping service- but really- I could have crawled there and back on my hands and knees faster...The packing was also poor- no cushioning material at all; it was just tossed in a manila envelope and sent out. Luckily, it arrived in one piece, but I'm sure that with packing like this, others haven't been so lucky...
Dying cow syndrome- TWICE
Pros: Not much to like about a drive that comes brand new with bearing noise. Replacement drive has the SAME ISSUE
Cons: New drive, bad bearing- makes a howling, grinding noise on spindown. Replacement drive does the same thing- what happened to WD???
Overall Review: Bought this 2TB WD Black on it's reputation, previous experience, and 5 year warranty. I've had many of these over the years, and all have well outlived their manufacturer warranty period. That said, it appears that WD may have given up on protecting the reputation of their HDD's, as they slowly move over to the SSD business. The drive arrived quick from NewEgg, packed in the usual, sloppy manner: in the bottom of a box, with no cushioning on the bottom, all cushioning was on the sides and top. That said, I doubt that rough handling in shipment caused this issue, however- as the box was perfectly intact upon arrival...this time, anyway...NewEgg really needs to re-train their order fulfillment staff to properly cushion shock-sensitive product on ALL SIX SIDES of the package...It's really not asking much... I powered up the drive, formatted it, and on the very first spindown, it was apparent that the bearings were not healthy. It makes a noise that is a combination of a loud whine, with some grind to it- sounds just like a dying cow. Unfortunately, after doing some quick research on the internet, it appears that for the past six months or so, a lot of people have been receiving drives that exhibit this horrible noise on spindown, and WD has not commented on it as of yet... The noise is the sound of a slow death, and I'm not keeping it. I have opened an RMA with NewEgg, and will be sending it back for replacement immediately. I will allow just one chance here for them to send a good, non defective brand new replacement drive- but if the new one arrives and has any issues whatsoever, I'll be asking for my money back, as I don't have time to play the RMA shuffle until I get a good one. Sadly, it seems that the quality of the HDD product at WD isn't what it used to be. I do understand that occasional defects can happen, but after reading of so many other people encountering this same "dead cow" noise on spindown- I'm afraid that this may spell the end of the good HDD's. If SSD in a 2TB size were less expensive, I wouldn't even be thinking of getting a replacement for this thing, but the pricing on those is still extortive at this point, so.... ________________________________________________________________ EDIT: I received the replacement drive today (2018-01-16). Defective right out of the box. Makes the same whining, grinding, dying cow noise that the last drive made on spindown, like the bearing is damaged or the platter is out of balance. At this point, I can only assume that WD is moving out whatever junk parts they have left on the shelf, in preparation to move solely to the SSD market. I'm on hold now so I can get a return shipping label or call tag, and a refund. I'm not doing this over and over again until I finally get a working drive. I'm done...
Not as good as the last one I purchased
Pros: Holds a lot of mp3 songs
Cons: Isn't as compatible as other drives. The last one of these I purchased- same brand, same size- works in anything I put in into. This one has issues in 2 of 3 devices I have tried it in. Defective? dunno. Time will tell...
Overall Review: It's hit or miss with this one. It works in some devices, but not in others...
Follow-up review...
Pros: None. Drive arrived defective out of the box, with over 1K bad blocks. WD advised that I return it to my vendor.
Cons: Drive arrived with too many bad blocks, per WD support. I returned it for a replacement, and the replacement drive also had a count of over 1K bad blocks right out of the box.
Overall Review: WD quality control is slipping. Do yourself a favor, and check the SMART data immediately when you install the new drive. Lots of these are shipping with a HUGE amount of bad blocks. While you may not notice a problem right away, with that many bad blocks, it will run out of blocks to replace a lot faster. The fact that I received two bad drives in a month tells me: A- WD's quality control is slipping, because they could have stopped these before they left the factory, and B- there is a large batch of these out there, in stock at your favorite vendor... be careful...
drive not recognized most of the time
Pros: price was good, that's about it.
Cons: 99 times out of 100, the drive is not recognized by any computer it is plugged into.
Overall Review: bought cheap, installed a drive. Plug it into any computer, and 99 times out of a hundred, the little light will light up on the case, but the computer won't recognize the drive. I've confirmed the drive to be fine. Defective unit, I would assume.
Decent discs, but very pricey...
Pros: My first foray into burning Blu-Ray discs. Went with these because they are one of the only name-brand discs I can find. Worked fine; no coasters...
Cons: Ridiculously expensive.
Overall Review: Given the fact that I successfully burned two of the three with no issues, I'd say they work. They are hideously expensive for what is essentially a dvd-r or cd-r. Just because you can write more data to it than cdr or dvdr doesn't mean they should cost a thousand percent more. It's the same piece of plastic, and I'm sure they cost pennies to produce, if that...
