Beautiful Motherboard

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Came from Newegg with F4 bios so no update needed. Fit and finish are excellent. Copious LEDs and even a HEX LED display. All SATA are accessible with a bigger case like the Antec 900 and none are blocked by the video card(s) -- that's why the SATA are rear-facing.

Cons: If you are planning a triple-card setup take note that in my Antec 900 case with a bottom-mounted PS, a third double-wide video card would not fit. It would hand over the edge of the board and interfere with the PS.

Overall Review: Lets face it, people work on custom PCs today are the people who built V8 hot rods in the 1960s-70s. This MB smacks of a fresh-built Ford 427. And with the i7 you get eight threads! Two notes from my setup: 1) I always have trouble at first getting USB mouse and KB to be seen. I had to go to the bios and activate the legacy USB support to get my KB to remain visible at later boot stages. 2) In running GSkill 3x2GB DDR3 1600 (NE item N82E16820231225) I set changed XMP to "Enable" to get the bios to switch from 1066 profile to 1600. Then all was well. No need to manually enter parameters.

trouble with Phenom II 940 ...

MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Worked perfectly with my AMD 9850BE and four 2Gb sticks of Corsair -- even ran at 1066. It seemed to run pretty cool. The build quality seemed good.

Cons: I had a problem when I upgraded to the AMD Phenom II 940. Even with the latest bios, at least some of these MSI boards default to vcore = 1.8V for that proc. This is a dangerously high voltage, but you can race into the bios and change it downward. I'm sure MSI will fix this in a later rev.

Overall Review: Some here haven't seen the 940 Vcore problem (or don't know they have it), but have a look at the MSI forums - search "K9N2 SLI platinum - another problem w/ Phenom II " My CPU shot up to 80C before I realized it was running at 1.8v. I sold this MB rather than RMA because I already removed the UPC for the rebate. Lesson: avoid rebated motherboards or wait the full 30 days of test and burn in before removing the UPC if the rebate allows it.

Sent rebate before testing to discover it arrived DOA, RMA only choice - not happy

Antec TruePower Classic series TP-750C 750 W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Power Supply
Antec TruePower Classic series TP-750C 750 W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Power Supply

Pros: - Antec generally a good brand but I'm going for the first tier models from now on - Got with a $30 rebate, but blew that on shipping for the RMA

Cons: - Was DOA from the factory. No power. No life. - After rebate sent, RMA only choice. But this is $20+ shipping to CA. - Replacement supply for brand new unit was a scratched used unit under the RMA.

Overall Review: I have never had trouble with Antec supplies, so I got this on rebate and sent in the rebate. When I got to trying the supply it was DOA. Then discovered Antec requires you to pay for shipping, MA to CA. These things are like bricks. Shipping ranged from $20-$35, which pretty much eviscerated the rebate. Then the supply I got back wasn't my brandy new one, it was a scratched up one from somebody else and who knows what happened to it. Now I can sell what I have and don't want to use it.

Perfect size/resolution combo

ViewSonic VP2770-LED Black 27" 2K SuperClear IPS Monitor, 1000:1, 300cd/m2, USB&HDMI&VGA&DVI-D Display Port, VESA mountable
ViewSonic VP2770-LED Black 27" 2K SuperClear IPS Monitor, 1000:1, 300cd/m2, USB&HDMI&VGA&DVI-D Display Port, VESA mountable

Pros: DVI and Dlink Factory color cal. 10-bit if you want it. Quality is good. Perfect size/resolution combination. Price for this 10-bit PLS panel right now is unbeatable.

Cons: Now my wife will want one! One dark pixel across two monitors, but you have to squint to see it - it looks like a spec of dust.

Overall Review: I finally replaced my aging CCFL IPS LCDs with a pair of these and I wish now I'd done that sooner. The picture excellent. The color is really breathtaking - try watching some 4k youtube videos.

Great panel, terrible stand.

Acer G7 Series G257HU smidpx 25" WQHD 2560 x 1440 2K 4ms (GTG) DVI HDMI DisplayPort Built-in Speakers LED Backlight IPS Monitor
Acer G7 Series G257HU smidpx 25" WQHD 2560 x 1440 2K 4ms (GTG) DVI HDMI DisplayPort Built-in Speakers LED Backlight IPS Monitor

Pros: One of the lowest priced 2560 x 1440 IPS panel. Great picture. Feels almost like a retina display. Lots of menu adjustments.

Cons: Terrible stand. Not adjustable. Too low. Wobbly. No VESA mount so you can't buy an aftermarket stand. A deal breaker for me. The unit generally feels cheap. I don't like the silver bottom and black sides and top.

Overall Review: For 2560 x 1440, 25-inches is almost too small. Its like a laptop screen and I find I'm inclined to sit close. The picture is crisp and bright.

great deal
