Cool & very Quiet

Antec Sonata Elite Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Antec Sonata Elite Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: My 8th different case purchase over the years, but only my 2nd higher end case. This thing is quiet with all the fans on low. I can hardly tell it is on compared to my old case that I had rigged with foam insulation and such. Temperatures are cool, my processor fan has yet to spool up to full speed, and my fan-less video card maintains 50c at all times. Hard drives report nice temperatures in Ubuntu. Hard drive mounts had soft rubber dampers that seem to really quiet fast drives. I like the traditional power supply up top design as the hot air is sucked out the top by my power supply’s big 120mm fan. There doesn’t seem to be much to the filter, but time will tell if it actually filters anything. Hard drives are mounted on their sides, not sure if that will affect performance/durability.

Cons: There doesn’t seem to be much to the filter, but time will tell if it actually filters anything. Hard drives are mounted on their sides, not sure if that will affect performance/durability.

Trouble free

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL8D-4GBRM

Pros: Installed, booted, tested, without issue. Cool looking heat spreaders.

Cons: DDR3 memory is pricey

Overall Review: I haven't tried to over clock yet.

Full Ubuntu Support

ECS G41T-M(2.0) LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ECS G41T-M(2.0) LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Full Ubuntu Linux support out of the box, including full 3D desktop effects, and suspend to ram. I did nothing but install the OS in about 14min I had everything working. Makes for an amazingly cost effective easy to support (no viruses) platform for my parents for under $250. Plays 720p h264 with only an E3200 CPU. This rig idles at under 50watts. Good sound output.

Cons: Not a board with high end over clocking settings.

Great Value

Linkworld 727-08-2128FU+p04 Black/White Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case 430W Power Supply
Linkworld 727-08-2128FU+p04 Black/White Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case 430W Power Supply

Pros: was not whisper quiet but not as loud as expected, this case really looks sharp, small size but everything seems to fit, great usage of front USB connectors all cases should be like this, very light weight, decent ventilation, everything seems to be cool enough, DVD drive door looks nice

Cons: Thin metal; be careful with screws as too much torque will strip out the holes; button for DVD drive is a bit difficult to press when the drive is open.

Overall Review: I had no problems assembling with this case, and would recommend it to anyone.

No problems = Joy

MSI P55-CD53 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
MSI P55-CD53 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: I am running Ubuntu Linux 9.10 as alpha (after reading its support of the P55 chipset was best). Everything seems to be working and stable out of the box, even suspend which is a feature I love. On-board sound is better than I expected and I will use this over my SB Live card.

Cons: I am having some issues getting the sound drivers in my Virtualbox sessions of XP and Win7 to work without crackling, hopefully this will clear itself up once 9.10 comes out of beta.

Overall Review: I have enabled all the board features with my i5 CPU including Green Power, EIST, Turbo, and C-state without issue. I set CPU Smart Fan Target 45c and fan min speed to 50% and I don’t think I have ever heard it fully spool up. I went with my own thermal paste instead of the stock though. The machine idles at 75watts and seems to max at about 125watts. I am using a fan-less MSI N9400GT that runs all the 3D desktop effects out of the box in Ubuntu. I haven’t tried to over-clock yet. Testing with geekbench shows that it is 7x faster than my old AMD 1600+ box running stock, so I may wait to see how others do.
