Nice machine

AOpen Digital Engine DE2700 WW Intel 945GSE Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System
AOpen Digital Engine DE2700 WW Intel 945GSE Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: Quiet, low power, completely solid state unless you put a mechanical HDD. Fast enough to play MKV video files with no problem. I use it as a multi-media machine running Ubuntu and can play music, videos (not ISO images), surf the web, etc... Video plays well with my 32" TV with no blurring or choppiness, and audio out is strong enough to drive a set of speakers.

Cons: Will not boot from the CF if an HDD is installed also, at least as far as I can tell. Not quite powerful enough to open a DVD image file. Be careful driving an amp with the audio out; I overpowered my amp and had to wait for it to reset. The NIC's in the one I got use the R8168 chipset which is not open source, so Debian will not install out of the box. I had to use Ubuntu.

Overall Review: I have a friend who is using these also for site-to-site VPN routers (OpenVPN) running IPFire. It works well for him. I purchased this to test as a router for resale, but it has taken over as my media player so I'll have to get another for that testing. You can install one mini-pci device in it which are available on the web.

Most Critical Review

Gotcha's

ASUS 15.6" AMD E-450 4GB Memory DDR3 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
ASUS 15.6" AMD E-450 4GB Memory DDR3 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Pros: Inexpensive, semi-decent screen, large hard drive. linux dual boot fairly easy, though you do need the 2.6.39 kernel to use the Atheros wireless (I prefer Debian Stable, but it is at 2.6.32, I think). I installed Mint with no problems.

Cons: First, realize this does not have bluetooth. I didn't even bother looking for that, 'cause bluetooth is cheap and all, but I guess they saved a few pennies by not installing bluetooth on it. Second, bloatware, bloatware, bloatware. The thing runs dog slow out of the box, but speeds up to reasonable once you have spent a couple of days removing all the crud, and that is what it is is crud, that ASUS puts on here. And, frankly, some of the "enhancements" destabilize the system (search for asus windows explorer not responding c0000005). Note that the last is a problem with HP's also. So, the system is unusable right now on the Windows side until I get a Win7 Home Premium ISO to do a clean Windows install (not ASUS windows) on it. This one irriration alone dropped my rating on this machine (bluetooth is my own fault for ASSuME'g something that cheap would be included in everything). I am very disappointed, as ASUS has been the brand recommended to my clients for several years.

Overall Review: I have used ASUS exclusively for my laptops/netbooks in the past, and will likely continue for a while. But, this experience has made me question that loyalty. Purchase the hardware, but don't expect any kind of speed or stability from ASUS's poorly modified Windows.

Works well on my Unix machine

MINIX NEO A2 2.4G Wireless Voice Air Mouse Keyboard Remote Control for PC Notebook Smart TV
MINIX NEO A2 2.4G Wireless Voice Air Mouse Keyboard Remote Control for PC Notebook Smart TV

Pros: Plugged it in and got an immediate reaction from the workstation (Debian Linux). Nice instructions at the XMBC/Kodi site let me set it up for my media player. I also liked the "mouse" and the built in keyboard

Cons: Didn't really see anything bad for my use

Overall Review: I built an XBMC/Kodi machine for a non-technical friend, but she was having issues using the wireless interface from her phone to do things. Bought this for her and she is very happy with it. I liked it so much, I'm buying another one for me.

Exactly what I needed

C2G 52039 DB9 F/F Serial RS232 Null Modem Cable, Black (10 Feet, 3.04 Meters)
C2G 52039 DB9 F/F Serial RS232 Null Modem Cable, Black (10 Feet, 3.04 Meters)

Pros: Nice quality, works well. It communicates; what more do you want? Long enough I can slide one server out of cabinet without unplugging it.

Cons: None

Overall Review: Needed a crossover cable for an HA iSCSI server pair we built. Looked at several electronics stores in town and could not find one (or even someone who knew what it was). Thought I'd have to build it myself, but found this on NewEgg and ordered it. Thank goodness.

Looks good, but outside installation interesting

Foscam FI8906W Outdoor Wireless IP Camera 4mm Lens
Foscam FI8906W Outdoor Wireless IP Camera 4mm Lens

Pros: Appears to have good image quality in initial tests, and fairly stable on the wireless. Looks attractive and the mounting hardware is well thought out. "Feels" like a solid piece of equipment.

Cons: The connections are NOT what I would have wanted for an outdoor installation. The cord coming from the camera contains a reset switch (appears weatherproof), a CAT5 plug and a power plug (1/8" probably) all in one. So, I'm a little concerned about corrosion/dirt on the connectors under use, especially the CAT5 plug which will have nothing plugged in (thinking about just putting a plug in it for this reason only). The power plug (separate unit containing plug, transformer and wire) does not plug into a standard outdoor socket and, since it is a molded unit, is difficult to modify. I ended up purchasing a 4 gang weatherproof electrical box and hard wiring a cable to it, then had that cable come out of the box and down to my outdoor weatherproof outlet. I"m sure there are other ways of doing this, but it was the simplest for my use. Due to the problems figuring out how to get power to the unit safely and weather resistant, I have not completed the installation yet. Just be aware installation may be an issue if you really want to mount it outside.

Overall Review: Overall looks very good for the price. Deducted 2 eggs for outdoor installation problems.

Good for what I needed

WD Green WD20NPVX 2TB 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Hard Drive
WD Green WD20NPVX 2TB 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Gives you 2T in a 2.5" space IF it will fit in the required space. I purchased 3 of these to be used as a software RAID-5 on a refurbished DL-380 G5 for use as an iSCSI target. Because of the extra height, I removed the metal shield portion of the carriage and they installed just fine. I now have almost 4T of RAID-5 with 5 bays open for expansion. This use is what it appears the drives are designed for. They are not laptop drives unless your laptop has the extra height to allow their use.

Cons: Out of the three drives, one was DOA. Knowing NewEgg honors their warranties, I went ahead and set it up as a degraded RAID-5 (ie, only two drives), got an RMA from NewEgg and returned it. When the replacement came in soon after, inserted the replacement drive, rebuilt the RAID set and all was good. However, it cost me shipping (minimal) and the extra hassle of waiting and then going to the NOC to replace it was not good. However, I had read the other reviews here and was prepared for this.

Overall Review: Took off one egg for the DOA, but I'll buy more of these. The access time is adequate so far for my iSCSI application (I have 16G of RAM for caching). The only time the speed made any difference was when initializing targets by copying large amounts of data, but that is infrequent. I intend to create a second iSCSI device and set it up as HA, and will purchase the same drives for that, and also when I extend my RAID set on both machines. Just be prepared to RMA drives when (not if) they show up DOA.

I like these people.

Never heard of them before, but this is the type of vendor I like. Package arrived on time (actually, a little sooner), well packed, and the product was as described.

Excellent Customer Service

UPS delivery messed up (not vendors fault). Vendor went above and beyond in their customer service. They ensured I got the parts I needed to repair a server about to die in a timely manner. Additionally, they communicated regularly to let me know the solutions they were working on, then followed up to ensure the shippers records matched reality. Plus, the parts (hard drives) were exactly as described, and packaged for shipping extremely well. Customer Service and you get what you order. I don't think anyone can expect more. Oh, the price was reasonable also. I will definitely look for EOL as a vendor the next time I need products from NewEgg. They are obviously a very customer oriented business.
