Will this hard drive work with a MacAir laptop (w Apple M2 chip)?

Hello Kenneth, Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, this Portable SSD is fully compatible with a MacBook Air (Apple M2 chip). To ensure the best possible performance, please note the following: This product supports USB4 (up to 40Gb/s). For optimal speed, we recommend connecting it to a Thunderbolt / USB4 Type-C port and ensuring your device supports the same specification. (Based on our understanding, the MacBook Air M2 does support this, but we suggest confirming with the official specifications.) Please use the included USB-C cable and connect it directly to your device’s USB-C (Thunderbolt / USB4) port for optimal stability and performance. If using a USB-A connection (adapter included), the maximum speed will be limited to approximately 10Gb/s. The SSD will still function normally even if not connected at full speed, but performance may vary. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us anytime — we’re always happy to help. We would also greatly appreciate your feedback after using the product, as it helps us continue to improve.

The DATO ARES Q4 is a 2TB magnetic portable SSD rated for up to 4,000 MB/s reads and 3,600 MB/s writes, suited to creators who need fast external storage and want to record 4K ProRes HDR video directly from a compatible iPhone 15 or 16 Pro model.

Recommended For

Mobile filmmakers using a compatible iPhone Pro can record 4K ProRes HDR directly to the SSD instead of first storing footage on the phone.
Mac users with a USB4 or Thunderbolt 4/5 port who move large video or other files and want to use the drive’s high-speed connection.
Mac desktop owners who want a compact drive to leave attached for routine Time Machine backups; one reviewer reports using the ARES Q4 this way for nearly a year.
Photographers and creators who carry a small external drive between locations and transfer large media files; an independent test reports strong sequential speeds with large files.

Real-World Use Scenarios

When filming a high-bitrate ProRes project on an iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, or Pro Max, record compatible footage directly to the SSD to keep large video files off the phone’s internal storage; use an exFAT-formatted drive and a suitable USB-C cable.
While shooting mobile video, attach the SSD magnetically to a compatible iPhone Pro instead of letting it dangle from the cable; this keeps the drive alongside the phone for a more compact recording setup.
After a shoot, copy large 4K video files to a compatible USB4 computer for editing or archiving; a hands-on review found the drive handled large files quickly, while results depend on the computer and connection.
For a Mac desk setup, keep the SSD connected as a local Time Machine backup destination; one ARES Q4 owner reports using it this way as a permanently attached backup drive.
When moving footage between a phone and a computer, use the SSD as portable file storage: the drive can be accessed from supported iPhone apps, and a review reports that an iPhone recognized the ARES Q4 for file transfers.
