Is this a new product sold in the original packaging?

Yes. Although I would not recommend buying it.  The capture bitrate is very low (around 2.5 mb/s) which will compress your image even further from its original quality.  I would recommend another option like going to through a DV port from an old camcorder or DV deck or finding something else that will not give you such quality loss.

For quick and easy capture, go with the Elgato, but if you're a professional or expect high quality results I would stray away.

Question 2

My sons football game was broadcast on TV and I recorded it on my DVR at home. With this device can I transfer the game to my MAC and then turn it into a DVD?

Yes it should work well for that.  You must have a windows 7 or 8 OS or even better your MAC.  As long as your recorder has composite output connectors.  Its a little expensive but I did a lot of comparison shopping and this item was very highly rated, good comments.  I haven't actually opened the box yet.  One way these various devices are different is in the type of video file they output, this output is h.264 which is a high quality.  It is really optimized for MAC computers.  Just make sure your DVR has composite (traditional RCA style) connectors (red, white, yellow).

will this act as a TV tuner for an Apple Imax computer I am thinking about buying??  I have Time/Warner cable with all the channels on it and just want to watch the TV programs each evening.  CBS, Fox, ABC, and various other cable channels.

No, this is not a TV tuner. It's a device that can connect a VHS player to your computer so you can digitize the video into a file on your computer.

Can this device be used to capture game play footage on a PC?

I need some clarification:

Are you playing the game on a Mac:PC?

Or are you playing the game on an XBox/PSX and want to capture the video output to your Mac/PC?

If you're playing on the Mac/PC there are plenty of software options out there

If you want to export the A/V feed from a game console to your Mac::PC this should work just fine

Can I use this to put a live preview of an analog video device in a window on my Mac (preferably via "New Movie Recording" in QuickTime Player)? I don't care about _recording_ from the analog source; I just need the video playing live on my Mac so I can use it in livestreams and conference presentations.

I'm a PC user (never had a Mac) but in using this with Windows 7, the answer would be "yes".

The accompanying software is actually a window showing what the VHS tape is playing at that moment -- it streams to the computer in real time, and is captured in real time. So if you are looking for a means of streaming a VHS tape to your computer for any reason other than recording, this should work for you.

When the recording is over, simply delete the created file, right? No problem.

Dumb this down for me please...Will this work on my PC with Windows 7 or is it just for Windows & on a Mac? It mentions PC in the title, but all the specs seem geared toward Apple.

It works great on any Windows 7 laptop or PC. I've been using it on a Dell laptop and it's really, really great. Very simple to use, and video quality is stellar.

I've saved some VHS movies that are not available on DVD using this device to digitize them (RCA cables from the VCR Player, run through this, into my laptop). The files are around 700 Megabytes each.

I used on iMac OS 10 so this is not a for sure answer, but if it works on the iMac then your WIN 10 is probably okay.  I just looked at the box and it says "PC Windows 7 or later. 2.0 GHZ Intel/AMD CPU.

My iMac is a 2008 vintage and Elegato ran fine.
