What is the difference in platinum, gold, silver, bronze power supplies?

The amount of wasted energy they are rated for. Wasted energy is energy the power supply is creating, but the computer is not using. The higher rating the better energy efficiency.

How does the noise of this PS compare to the Corsair CX430 (loud!)? Is this PS truly "Very, very quiet" like one reviewer said? I need a very quiet PS for my wife's computer.

I really fell in love with this PSU. It uses a large diameter fan that doesn't require a lot of RPM. I don't recall ever hearing the fan at all.
