In the pictures it does not have a backplate. Does it not come with one?

There's no backplate. If its overheating your worried about don't. I got two in SLI set to have 50% fan speed at 70C. The most taxing game i've played out of BF4, BFH, Dragon age: inq, Arma3, H1Z1, or FarCry 4 all on ultra settings 1080P 120hz was Far Cry 4 @ a max fan speed of 46% and max temp of 67C for the card thats on top the other is usually 10 degrees cooler. Plus my current case doesn't have a side fan blowing on them. Would probably lower the temp by another 5 to 10 degrees. This card stays really cool for its performance.

Yes. DirectX supports all previous version and this card supports up to DX12.

do it have led logo on the side?

If you have a traditional oriented case, the edge you want lit is lit. The side with the fans does not have lit logos.  The top edge has lit logos. you can see the "EVGA" logo,  "GEFORCE GTX 980" and then the "FTW".  The lights are controllable through EVGA experience, and can be strobed, dimmed, and a variety of other effects according to triggers you set, like temperature, usage %, or sli enabled.  Pretty nifty, only drawback is that they are just white lights, no RGB...cant have it all.

The specs say 3 display ports, 1 dvi and 1 HDMI but the pictures don't show that. Which is correct?

The card has 2 DVI (1 DVI-I and 1 DVI-D) ports, 1 HDMI port, and 1 Display Port for a total of up to 4 displays being used at once (for example, 3 for triple monitor surround setup + 1 chatbox/browser/etc.)

I'm guessing it's saying 3x Display port with the use of a display port splitter? If that were the case, maybe you can use said splitter in a combination of 2 display port monitors via a DP splitter and 2 others, or 3 display port monitors via a DP splitter and 1 other.

In terms of physical ports, no. There is only 1 Display port on this card.

How much heat does this card put out in comparison to other similar cards?

I dont over clock the card and using it just for editing with video software for me it stays around 53C. I've not tested it while actually in game yet but I use it for gaming and its the best card i've ever had. i use to crossfire 2 AMD cards... i'll never go back. A single one of these is better.

Hey, I have yet to upgrade to 4k but I am curious as to how well this card (Single) currently handles it? What kind of FPS do you get with your build in what games as well as temps and stability? I don't know how intense 4k is on ultra settings. If you have SLI input that is welcome as well.
I haven't seen any reviews or others ask this. I'm just wondering.

Nvidia recently stabilized the drivers, making this a solid card.  However, if sound is a concern, this card is screamer.  I get a solid 60fps in Dragon Age Inquisition on ultra settings with 4xmsaa and reshade.  It eats everything I've thrown at it from Skyrim.  Can get a bit warm, around 70 Degrees.  I solved that with Precision X, making the custom fan run 0,0 to 100,70.  Screams either way and doesn't get much over high 40 to low 50 now.  I would Recommend this card, as well as liquid cooling for the noise and heat if you can't stand it.

Is It 3d??

Yes.  The majority of all GTX cards these days are 3D compatible.  My first was GTX 570.  The ability to do 3D is dependent on your monitor/tv, the cable attaching it, glasses and an IR emitter (turn on/off the glasses) if not already built-in to the monitor.  When installing the nvidia drivers, you will also install the 3D driver.  At that point you can enable/disable stereoscopic 3D through the nvidia control panel.

Is anyone using 4 of these in one rig?

There's no point with 4 way sli anymore and even 3 way sli isn't going to get you a noticeable performance boost in games. Perhaps with F@H it might or with other gpu compute based functions but it's not worth it at this pricepoint. The most I'd recommend is 2 way sli and that's if you need to run a triple 4k setup.

This is an unrelated question, but, does anyone know when the lower end cards are coming? say a gtx 950. thanks

First off, the 960 has already been released in the neighborhood of $200. I'm not sure if or when anything less powerful will be coming down the pike, at least not soon. EVGA has really been pushing hard as of late getting the high performance cards to market, 980FTW, 980 Classified, 980 Hydro Copper and the Kingpin Classified. These cards are where they make their money. I'm sure closer to the end of the 980 run you will probably see something like a 950 but that is usually due to the way they bin their chips. Best chips make it to the high end (980), then the chips that can't cut it get binned to the 970 group and so on. If we do see 950's that will be at the end of run when they have left over silicon that can't be sold in the higher performance class of cards and are hoping to reap some type of profit from the weaker silicon that was set aside during the high performance manufacturing of the very best silicon used in the high performance cards. Be aware, even though I jumped on the 980 boat, ( I only did so because they were having issues getting their hands on 22 nm chips, and announced they didn't anticipate getting any until fall) that I anticipate after receiving them a new card ( replacement for Titan,780 and 780Ti which was built on the larger 110 die) will be hitting the market. Right now, the 28nm chips used in the 980 series is based on the 106 die which was what the 770, and 680/690 were based on. They are calling the Maxwell 900 series chip a 206, so expect seeing a new batch of much more powerful cards built on the 210 platform (or whatever they decide to call it) which will be the replacement for today's Titans, 780's and 780Ti's. From past experience I predict at least a 30% increase in power from the 980 lineup (as well as an increase in power consumption) and a new line of Titans, possibly a card they will call the 980TI and probably something in the 1xxx lineup to differentiate them from the 980/970 lineup.

What is the best? 4GB 256-BIT OR 4GB 512-BIT

This perticular video card has 256 bit bus because of the manufacturering process which is built upon a 22 or 28nm fabrication process. I don't think we will see 512 bit bus anymore because it cost way to much and causes too much heat. By lowering the fabrication process they are able to clock the cards faster and use less power and heat.
