1. What is a "Vault hard drive"? 2. Can you record to your own PC or server?

No you can not! I'm looking at selling mine because I want to back up all recordings to my server. To do that now with the ezviz Mini Plus you need to stop recording pull the SD out and manually back up the files and I've had some corrupted files doing this. It is a very poor setup for that. It does have a great picture.

what kind of battery is used and is it rechargeable?

no battery at all plugs into wall. If you want a battery buy the Arlo.
