Great preface to smart homes of the future.

Pros: This is easily a 5-egg device for what it is meant to do. It was very easy to setup! (Much easier than other IoT devices that rely on NFC to transfer WiFi credentials, for example.) There were no wireless signal issues, and the low cost is reasonable to use for many devices.

Build: Sturdy, doesn't feel flimsy or cheap.

Great organization: Timers/scheduling (by time or sunrise/sunset), device naming, "Away mode," and other more extensive modes of interactive control using IFTT.

Integration: Works with other IoT systems (Google Home/Nest, Alexa, and many others.)

Physical location (using Google Maps) seems disabled by default, for the privacy conscious consumers.

Cons: Email required to setup the device?

The plug is kind of bulky and the WeMo device itself might obstruct the lower power port on some outlets/plugs.

Not Cons, but noteworthy:

To Audio/Video users: The device seems to have power conditioning issues. (Currently, I haven't access to attenuators, an oscilloscope or CSA to see the results of the provided signal.) I tested with a guitar amplifier, and the sound had occasional/randomly static and fuzzy. Given these results, I'd say it's safe to use this device mainly with dumb devices that are not picky about the condition of the power signal. (US: 110V at 60Hz.)

Why didn't they include an on-board power meter? (With software monitoring, not display.) I'm sure it wouldn't have been too complicated, technically. Some Nest equipment detects power consumption and can schedule actions based on used wattage! This is great! (I had no such equipment. See the screenshots on the Android Market app page.)

Other Thoughts: This is my first experience with a power control device such as this one. I am impressed. They are inexpensive and have practical uses. I can certainly see devices such as the WeMo to a practical, affordable precursor to the "smart houses" that have been impending for years now. I didn't experience any bugs or other issues.

Also, I didn't test this feature, but it should integrate with other IFTTT devices, such as the EZVIZ camera (N82E16881389001). I imagine there could be a scenario like disabling a device and signaling to enable the camera. But, again, I didn't test this and I'm not an expert with IoT devices at the point in time.

Side note: Interestingly, in the release notes after a firmware upgrade, it mentioned using OpenWRT Sensor software. It's great to see such worthy FOSS software powering this Belkin device.

WORKS WITH GOOGLE HOME via IFTTT

Pros: Stays Connected, no WiFi issues, Setup was easy (from Galaxy S5 phone), WeMo App is very user friendly.

Cons: If you go through Google Home App setup you will find the WeMo not listed as of 12/04/2016, so it is not directly supported, BUT, if you setup the WeMo through the WeMo App (I recommend getting it fully working on your network first), then you can go to settings in the WeMo App and connect it an IFTTT account (If you don't have one you will need to create one).

Two small things, you do hear a click when the switch is switched (no biggie), and there is a little more of a delay going through IFTTT then using the WeMo App directly, but both of these are small issues and when Google Home supports the Switch in the near future one of these will be fixed.

Other Thoughts: A few IFTTT tips: I setup the WeMo Switch with the WeMo App first and made sure it worked on my network. I was able to turn on/off the switch through the WeMo App. (I named my WeMo Switch "Christmas Tree") Then I went to the settings on the WeMo App and Connect to IFTTT account (If you don't have one, create one). I found that I was unable to finish creating an Applet without going to settings and turning off the Two-step verification, which I turned on when creating my IFTTT account. Maybe I did something wrong but my WeMo switch works with the WeMo App and through Google Home. I only have one WeMo switch and it controls my Christmas Tree Lights.

There are 6 steps in IFTTT to set up an Applet: (To create a new applet Click My Applets ribbon at top of their web page then Click New Applet and Click +this)
Step 1 Choose a service (type Google Assistant then Click on the Google Assistant Icon)
Step 2 Choose trigger (I used Say a simple phrase)
Step 2.1 Complete trigger fields, VERY IMPORTANT TO USE ALL LOWER CASE, You have to say to Google Home exactly word for word what you put in here for Google to recognize your command. You have 3 different ways you can request your command. Last question is how you want Google to response to your request.
Pick +that
Step 3 Choose action service (type WeMo) then pick your WeMo device
Step 4 Choose action (I picked Turn on), You might can just pick Turn on/off but I got confused on what to ask Google Home so I made two Applets one for On and second one for Off
Step 5 Complete action fields (Here you pick your WeMo device from the pull down and Create action (I am guessing if you have more than one WeMo switch and want one command to control them all then you leave All Switches default
Step 6 Review and finish (Here you will see your first command and you will see (works with Google Assistant and WeMo icons at the bottom right) (I unchecked receiving notices for my Christmas Tree :)

If you are doing two Applets like I did then Repeat the above steps for Off Applet

At some point in the above steps you might be asked to Connect, I think it was around the 3rd step, anyway I was unable to connect through the IFTTT app it even suggest to Connect through the WeMo App so I had to go back to the WeMo App and Connect again, this might not happen to you but if so just do what IFTTT suggest.

If you done everything right you will show both the Google Assistant and WeMo Switch under Services from the pull down of your username in the IFTTT App, also you will see the Applet(s) you created under My Applets

One more note, I had problems using the IFTTT app on my phone (S5) (had a few blank screens) so I just went to the IFTTT website on my pc and had no problems, might of been why I had the connect problem I mentioned above.

Hopefully this will help some of you having troubles or with questions, hopefully I did not miss any steps, if I did I apologize.

Great smart plug!

Pros: First let me say that I like this device. You can set a timer so that it comes on when you want, or you can manually turn it on and off via the app. Setup was easy as pie. I plan on buying a few more of these in the future and also buying an Alexa compatible device. I recommend these to anyone who needs the ability to remotely turn something on or off.

Cons: App seemed a little flaky when setting timers, as it would show the old time until I got out of the app and back in.

Other Thoughts: I'm going to use this for the lamp at my front door. I can turn it on remotely when it gets dark, or have it intermittently turn on and off while I am away for business.

Awesome Invention

Pros: At first I wondered why anyone would need such a thing as this but I ended up thinking of quite a few different great uses for it. The first thing I did with this was plug my power strip for my entertainment system in to it. Now when I'm away from the house, sleeping, whatever, I can shut it off. Most electronics these days have standby modes which use a good deal of electricity or at the very least they have little red or green lights telling you their current power status. Making sure these devices are actually completely powered off means I'll be saving on my electricity bill. Another use was to plug in a lamp or radio in to it so I can turn it on or off from across the room when I feel like being lazy, which is awesome!

The setup for this device was extremely quick and simple to do. I even noticed features I didn't delve in to like schedules so if you have kids you can plug this device in and it stops your kids form watching tv or playing video games after a certain time of day.

One other thing I was thankful for on this device was the manual on and off switch so just in case your phone isn't with you or isn't working, you can turn it back on by hand, simple, smart.

Cons: Nothing to say here, hopefully the price goes down in the future so I can buy five or six of these, the smarter my house becomes the better.

Who's Got The Power? (WeMo!)

Pros: This WeMo unit does exactly what I expected it to do. Wifi connectivity, app interface, auto-off timers, with a relatively slim profile. Works great for turning on my lamp for me when I come home late at night and I don’t want the blinding overhead light on.

The app is available for free in the App Store. It’s very quick to open, easy to use and easy to set up your new device and keep it updated. It can also link with all WeMo products available.

When you have correctly set up the app for auto-off timers, device names, etc., it is consistent with keeping those settings (see Cons).

Cons: The app control has a lot of bugs when CHANGING features. For instance, I attempted to change the auto-off time from 1 minute to 5 minutes. The app says, Great! You want 5 minutes now. But when you actually turn the device on, the countdown is still 1 minute. I had to close the app and reopen it before it recognized the new settings.

If you move the device to a new outlet, also expect to restart the app to get it to connect.

When initially setting up my WeMo device, it recognized my Wi-Fi network right away, but I could not get it to connect. To solve this, I had to plug the unit in closer to the router. It quickly connected, then I could use it anywhere in the house where I normally received Wi-Fi signal.

Other Thoughts: Three-pronged connection, so be careful if you live in an older home with only two-pronged plugs, you may need an adapter. This also means you cannot plug two WeMos into the same outlet without some sort of power strip.

The device lets you know that it has been turned on or off with a significant “CLICK,” which could be a pro or a con depending on how you use it.

There is some integration with other hardware, like Nest Thermostat, but I feel like with software updates will come with more compatibility.

Overall, the device is great for what it's designed for, with only a few forgivable bugs in the software. With software updates and more integration, this device could be perfect.

A perfectly functioning device

Pros: This plug was VERY simple to add to my current WeMo devices. The app even saved my password to where I just needed to plug the device into a live outlet, log in to the WeMo device, and then switch back over to my wifi network and everything was already available and ready to use. No matter what I plugged into the outlet it worked great and didn't give me any trouble either through the device or through the app. The plug has considerable weight and heft. You can tell this thing is made to last. There are a few minor issues. One issue with the device itself and the other issues are more like...philosophical quandaries.

Cons: The only MINOR complaint I have with the plug is that when you turn it on and off it makes an almost comical exaggerated "CLICK" and "CLACK". It really is kind of cartoonish how loud the mechanism inside the device is. My son was in his high chair eating while I was tinkering with the device and he stopped and looked over to where the plug was with a worried look on his face and never took his eyes off that area of the room. I swear it looked like he was afraid the wall was going to come alive and eat him. You may think I'm just trying to be funny but the plug really is incredibly loud. The other "issue" I have with the plug I am going to put in the "Other (Optional)" section because it isn't really anything that is wrong with the plug itself or its function.

Other Thoughts: I honestly can't find anything in my house to use with this plug. You would think that a lamp would make sense but my first WeMo review was for LED light bulbs that can be controlled with the smartphone app. Not only can they be turned on and off and put on a timer like the plug can do but they can also be dimmed and brightened at different percentages which is far superior than just on and off. I looked all over my house for anything that I could regularly use with this plug and I couldn't find a single thing. Perhaps a desk fan or desk lamp would work but I don't use any of those regularly enough to need a special plug. If you are buying this for a lamp that takes a regular light bulb then I would buy the two-bulb WeMo kit which functions amazingly well. I am very interested in testing the wall switches available and other WeMo devices. They really are very well made products.

Handy!

Pros: Once set up the Wemo Switch is very handy and easy to use.
Solid build quality, doesn't feel cheap.
The app is easy to use and works well with a wireless network.
The app recognized the Wemo Switch right away.

Cons: Only one issue while once set up it worked fine I had serious issues getting my phone to work with this. I don't think I should have to change my phones settings in order for an app to work with it. It just seems like a bit more testing and tweaking would have saved me an hour and a half of frustration. While the app recognized the Wemo straight away I had to try and connect over and over, changing wifi settings on my phone until it would completely connect. It won't connect unless it only sees 1 network on my phone and frustrated me to no end. 1 Egg off for this and honestly I almost gave up on it completely before it actually worked.

Other Thoughts: Please do some work on the app and save customers a lot of trouble.

P.S. Not all phones have this problem. Mine is an LG Android based unit with the newest OP system.

Works great, easy to set up!

Pros: - Very simple to setup. Follow the basic printed directions to download the free iOS or Android app. Once downloaded, the app guides you through the wifi connection process. Worked on my first try!
- Works as advertised. The unit plugs into the wall and supplies power to a device (or power strip). You can remotely turn the device on via the mobile app at any time, from anywhere, assuming your wifi is on and functioning. You can also setup rules for the device. For example, you can tell the device to power on at a certain time (or times) of day. I use the device to turn on my old coffee pot at 7am each day of the week. You can plug a lamp into it, and set a rule to have it turn on at certain times of day for specific time intervals, or have it turn on at random times of day to make it seem like you are at home when you're not (via "Away Mode".) Tons of potential uses!

Cons: - None yet.
