How can I know if this is from the serial number series 23A or above? Is my only choice to buy and return it? The serial numbers 22 and below had lens problems. Sorry to be so picky but would like to know the serial number before I buy.

I doubt there is any guarantee regarding the manufacture date or the first few numbers of the serial, unless you can speak to someone who is actually packing your item for shipment (the serial is on the box, so it wouldn't even have to be opened to get that info). For what it's worth though, my first X-S1 (purchased over a year ago from the manufacturer) had a serial beginning with 21A. The lens-creep problem did not appear until hot weather. I sold that camera but I really missed having the X-S1, so I ordered a new one from Newegg in early August, '13. It has a serial beginning with 22A, and so far, no lens issues.
