Is it OK to charge other manufacturers Ni-MH AA/AAA batteries in this charger?

I have tried only one other brand. It did not work. The charger flashed indicating an error.

Are the batteries made in Japan or China? (Yes I know the product description says "Engineered in Japan" but usually that means the product is actually manufactured somewhere else).

According to the label in the batteries, they are made in Japan.

It blinks red. What does this mean?

There are several possibilities: 1. A battery is NOT making good contact with the battery charger's contacts. I've had this happen a few times with the FCT344 and two different Panasonic/Eneloop compact battery chargers. 2. The battery's voltage might be too low and the battery needs a "jump start" for one or two minutes using a "dumb" NiMH battery charger. 3. The battery is bad. Many of the newer advanced compact battery charger models have problems with older HSD (high self discharge) NiMH batteries. Do a web search using: fct344 review and look for a link near the top of list that starts with "Best of the Budget Chargers".
