In addition to recording  VHDto DVD ( and vica versa), can I also use this as a DVD player?

Yes, your able to use it as a DVD Player. I have been using it for both burning old home videos to disk along with to watch a handful of DVDs.

Is this a new recorder and does it burn vcr's to dvd??

Appears brand-new, no indication otherwise.  It does record to DVD-R or rewritable DVD-RW disks from VHS videocassette tape using dub feature.  It will also record from an external source (like a VCR or DVR) connected by ordinary RCA audio cable and either RCA video cable or Super-video cable.  Does not burn content arriving to it copy-protected (many commercial DVD videos, "some satellite broadcasts, some pay-per-view stations, and some 'premium' stations,") as most units don't.
I have owned various makes of DVD recorder and my best experience has been with the Magnavox that this Funai appears equivalent to.  Great durability, good clarity, and very helpful ability to PAUSE during recording (I had a Sony that could only pause in playback).  Good luck.

Will this player play vhs tapes out through the HDMI?  Does it up-convert vhs content?

The disc player does play VCR tapes out through the HDMI output and it does up convert. The quality is not great on tapes recorded on other machines, but much better on tapes recorded with this machine. But don't expect the quality to rival the DVD quality. Since this is the only reasonably priced unit on the market these days,  I am satisfied with the performance of the machine. This is the 4th one I have owned and the bells and whistles are getting less and less with each unit. I hope this answers your questions and concerns.

What type of DVD has to be used in recording or playing, ?  IS Verbatim DVD+RW OK??????

Page 27 of manual has important information:  Following discs are recommended for good recording quality and are proven to be compatible with this unit. However, depending on the media condition the unit
may not read the disc properly.
Verbatim DVD-R 8x, DVD-RW 2x
JVC DVD-RW 4x
Maxell DVD-R 8x/16x
Performance of any other discs are not guaranteed.
TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!   I bought a bunch of Verbatim "Digital Movie" DVD-R 8x media.  Works fine. Other media I had on hand would work on the Funai but not readable on other machines after finalizing.  Also before buying the machine know that it is very primitive; You'll have to extract the dvd to your computer later and work on it with Nero or whatever to fancy it up.  I'm very happy with all my Dad's VCRs now on DVD. He had recorded them from 35mm slides & 16mm films. Now I'm doing conversions for friends until the Funai wears out.

Does it have a remote?

It does have a remote that can be used for both recording and playback, but since there is no tuner you can't record from your TV.

Can it be programmed to record programs from a cable box. If so, how many programs stored for how long in the future?

Unfortunately I cannot answer that, as I used it to transfer VHS home movies to DVD only. And for that purpose, it was awesome. Very easy process.

What type of DVD is required to record or play?

So far I've only used inexpensive single-layer +R and -R DVD's and they work just fine, have never tried a dual-layer and don't know if they are supported, hope this helps.

The Magnavox and Funai versions of this product are slightly different, even though most of the key features are basically the same.  Your description contains the Magnavox brand name and the Funai model number.  Which one is it?

The FUNAI only recorded on one type of DVD, a DVD-RW.  You will need to buy some cords to hook it to your television and to record from your digital video camera.  I'm sure it will work with any TV. It will also play both VCR's and DVD's. If you want to record TV programs you would need a tuner which I have no idea how that works.

 on uk 240v?
