Question 1

My son's ACER desktop model (years & years old) came with 2 DDR2 512MB memory cards, for the advertised total of 1 GB of memory. Needless to say, we need to upgrade. There are 4 slots total on the board. Can I start with this: 4 GB (2 x 2 GB)?

I think it will work but suggested not to have it setup that way cause it might not work don't know for sure since I haven't tried it. Basically when you have a what you call a dual channel setup of 4 ram slots, you need to have all the ram as close together as you can as in all the 4 rams need to be of the same specs and need to have the same MHz so like this ram your looking at now has 667mhz you will need all 4 of the ram to be of 667mhz So they can all be on the same page, so in this situation it would be best if you purchased 2x512mb ram to match the original ones you already have in there, or you could put in 4 x 2gb ram sticks in there along with the correct MHz speed and that is the key. If you Google search "what is dual channel memory" you can get much more detailed helpful information that can explain it better than I can.

a computer guy told me to get these and they just arrived but I don't know how to put them in.  He said it was easy.  SHould I just open my PC and look for a place to plug them in?

Hi Tom,
Turn the PC off, unplug it, and open it up. You will see the existing RAM inside. If you are clear on whether you are adding this new RAM, or replacing the existing RAM, then proceed. Otherwise, you need to determine which you want to do. 4GB is pretty reasonable for average use these days, in case you need advice. Your new RAM may be faster than your old, as well. On the other hand, many motherboards have four slots for memory, so you might be able to just plug the new stuff in alongside what's already there.

Once you've figured that out, check the slots you plan on using for any dust or debris. The last thing you want is to turn your computer back on and hear weird noises and see a thin curl of smoke from your case. No fun. Use canned air if you need to (on the off chance you have any handy), or else..: well there really isn't any other safe/easy way.

When you're all set, line the RAM sticks up. One side of the stick goes into the board. That side is devided into two halves, and one of those is longer than the other so you can't put it in wrong. There are usually two clips, one on either end of the RAM slot. Make sure they're open, then gently but firmly push the RAM down into the slot until both clips snap shut. This may require some pressure, but don't shove. Just use firm pressure on both ends of the stick.

When both sticks are installed, close the PC up, plug it in, and turn it on, you're all set!

will this ram upgrade be compatible with a early 2008 MacBook Pro laptop?

If the MacBook Pro requires buffered, ECC registered memory, this RAM upgrade won't work.

Is this memory compatible with a DELL XPS 600 computer?

You could look that up with Dell. Honestly I have found very few computers that this ram actually works with. It will run in most computers for a short period of time. The longer you leave the computer running the closer and closer you will get to a b.s.o.d. I tried this ram in 4 different computers. All ended up with a b.s.o.d. within 15 to 20 minutes. The reason given was some long string of numbers and letters, physical memory dump and it reboots. good luck. hope this helps.

No , it is not.  6400 is a differentspeed RAM, and while it is faster in the proper computer - and you need to check the RAM speed of the existing memory - it will run no faster than the slowest RAM in your computer.
