Features

Removable Heat Spreader Fin

The G.SKILL TridentX series features a removable heat spreader fin to improve your cooling options. With the heat spreader fin, the increased surface area keeps the memory cooler. Alternatively, with a system that already has a sufficient cooling solution, the fins can be removed to accommodate massive CPU coolers or other customized cooling solutions.

If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

Very Happy 9/22/2015 8:59:58 AM

Pros: Steady and solid.

Cons: Couldn't overclock all the way. Only 4GB so max on mobo was 16 GB.

Hi Michel

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear the memory is working steady and solid in your build. This extreme frequency memory kit requires special hardware to operate at full speed. Refer to the G.Skill QVL list for compatible motherboards. In addition, not many CPUs will be capable. With a top end CPU like the Intel Core i7-4790K, only select processors will be able to reach DDR3-2666. Though if your CPU can not reach full frequency, you can lower timings to make up for performance. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

Thank you

Disappointed 4/29/2015 4:43:48 PM

Pros: Works at 2400
Looks great

Cons: Can't get it to boot at 2666
Must be my mobo or cpu?

Overall Review: Thought it would be compatible with parts on my end.

Dear Customer

Glad to hear you like the appearance of the RAM and it is working well in your system. The Intel i5-4690K CPU is not guaranteed for DDR3-2666. The overclocking margin of each CPU varies, and based on our testing, generally the i7-4790K is necessary for DDR3-2666+. With XMP enabled, manually input the Systems Agent Voltage to see if you can bypass the limitation. If not, you can achieve similar performance by reducing timings with DRAM Frequency at DDR3-2400. Should you need any assistance with this, please feel free to contact us directly. We will make sure your computer is running at maximum performance.

Pros: High clock speed, comes with fan

Cons: Can't actually get them to clock past 2600. Granted, its probably me not doing something right, but still.

Dear Customer

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear the memory kit is working well in your system. If you are unable to reach the rated specification, don't worry, contact the G.Skill support team and they will be glad to assist you. DDR3-2600 is an extreme frequency, not many CPUs can support it. If yours is capable of it, this memory kit should have no problem. The G.Skill support team will make sure the computer is operating at maximum performance.

Updated Review 9/18/2013 7:41:21 AM

Pros: I have now purchased TWO of these kits. They are now running at a very stable @ 2800 MHZ on a Haswell based rig. Couldn't be more pleased with the results :-)

Cons: None.

Overall Review: Since Haswell has a much more robust IMC than it's predecessor, Ivy Bridge, I felt these memory sticks would be more compatible with a 4th gen CPU and a good quality mobo (GA- Z87-UD3H) that is on GSkill's QVL.

Dear Customer

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear the memory overclocks very well in your Ivybridge build. This is one of the best memory kits on the market, so you can bet results will be outstanding. The timings may be loose when comparing to DDR3-1333 or DDR3-1600, but for double the frequency at DDR3-2666, it is considered extremely low. Timings must be compared with the corresponding frequency. DDR3-1600 with a lower CAS 9, does not mean it will be faster than DDR3-2666 CL11. In fact, with the latest CPU designs, DRAM Frequency plays a greater role in improved performance over timings. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

Pros: Fast and so far reliable. Sturdy design.

Cons: Advertised as 2666, functioning at best 2400. As other users have stated, its a CPU matching game, which isn't plainly advertised. Taking an egg off for that lack of advertisement.

Overall Review: LEDs in the fan module are UV-ish. Purple-ish blue. Pretty cool looking and has dictated the UV color scheme. I don't really like the way it is mounted, by just hanging on the DIMM tabs. It took a bit of bending to get it to be secure.

Bought 2 more at 2400 (at literally half the cost) since that's all I can hit anyways.

Dear Customer

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear the memory is working fast and reliable in your system. DDR3-2666 is not for everybody. DDR3-1600+ is considered overclocking by Intel, so by purchasing DDR3-2666, it should be known that the CPU to be used in conjuction with this RAM is capable of DDR3-2666+. This is not an average memory kit, so it is not supported by an average CPU. Intel i7-3770K CPUs have been tested to support DDR3-2400, but anything higher depends on the specific CPU. The memory controller is embedded in the CPU, so it is up to the extreme user to test the overclocking margins of a CPU memory controller to achieve DDR3-2666+. DDR3-2400 is still very good, you can lower timings to make up for the lower frequency. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.
