Do I actually need a new GPU, or am I just convincing myself?

Well that depends, did you get the RTX 4070 Super you talked about in July?

If your GPU is still handling 1080p or 1440p gaming well, you might be okay keeping it.

If you’re trying to push 4K, high-refresh monitors, ray tracing, or demanding AI workloads, then your current card might really be the bottleneck.

What @HappyGaming says is correct here. The line to define is “How good is good enough” If you’re enjoying the games at the quality you want, that’s enough. Instead of chasing the FPS numbers, just see if you enjoy the games currently without the FPS counter.

Treat yourself :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

What do you currently have?

I’d say you should get a new GPU if it is not meeting demands of games, and what I mean by this is it physically cannot run them. Otherwise try and wean yourself off ULTRA RAYTRACING MAX because at the end of the day you can’t even tell the difference between High and Ultra half the time. Most games look great on low and you can’t tell from ultra!

I had a 6800xt and the only reason why I upgraded is because I wanted a better raytracing experience via a 9070xt. One other factors is that I have an ITX case and the 6800s ran pretty hot. (but this was a minor factor for me)

that said the reality is the last game that I played on that 6800 XT was Indiana Jones and the great circle which is a current generation game. did it run the best? absolutely not. I had to turn certain things down or suffer popins at objects in the distance in certain areas of the game. Did I have a good time playing it? YES! So if you can’t afford it slowly save up for a new one and enjoy the games you can play. The things you can’t play, will always be on steam for when you do get an upgrade and probably cheaper by then.
