how do you get good at a video game? YT videos? Coaching? Vod reviews?

Let’s say you wanted to get good. REALLY good at a video game, what do you do? I’ve done VoD reviews and YT videos which have helped. But after a small surge in improvement, it stagnates again. Like 2- YT videos might get me about 2 more rank ups. But any YT video after that doesn’t help me rank up anymore. I’d prefer not to pay for coaching, but I might have to. I’d like to get coaching for a long period of time. But I also don’t want to spend tons of money on coaching either

What an age old question my friend. And the answer is varied and nuanced of course. I could just give you the standard get to Carnegie Hall slab answer of “Practice, Practice, Practice”…but I heard similar when I asked the question earnestly and I’d could just barely contain my smiled glare at such an answer.

We can address this with 3 different other questions to ask yourself.

  1. Is this something you really want to do or just the latest fad?
  2. What do you plan to do with or get out of the skill?
  3. How much time/energy/money do you have to devote?

Is this something you really want to do or just the latest fad?
I ask this because I was dead sure I wanted to be a dentist (realized too yucky), then an optometrist (realized too squeamish), then a marine biologist (can’t swim)…and so on. Eventually, it I earned a degree in Comp. Sci. and because of my love for the things, I took on way more Math, Physics, & Science - just to be near these machines as an expert. The passion sustained me through the learning curve.

Same with games. Everything else was just casual, but the compelling storyline of Jak & Daxter and the fun in it made me seek out each game in the series 1, 2, & 3 and play until late night. For Street Fighter I’ve logged 1000’s of hours over the years as I desire to at least give my opponent a challenge, but the PRO’s have logged 10,000s to stand on the podium.

So if this is just a fad you don’t need a coach, incremental improvement is fine, and don’t forget you get the privilege of GAMING - have fun!

What do you plan to do with or get out of the skill?
~ Do you want to stream? Show your hero’s skill journey

~ Do you want to turn Pro? Join a guild - they share secrets.
~ Do you want to know enough to be a commentator? Watch other hosts.
~ Do you want to make your own game? Become a play tester.
Sometimes what you want to do with the skillz can direct how you go about gaining the skillz.

How much time/energy/money do you have to devote?
Knowing 1 & 2, now you can determine your 3 and how much of each of those elements you want to contribute to gaining the head-knowledge and hand-eye coordination.

Finally, nowadays forget Google…you can always just Chat GPT it.
Hope this helped.
